I have a question...

These guys will go to every corner of the world from Hong Kong to Colombia.

Is there a reason they won't come to India? Well we have scores of pilots flying here with tons of time and experience. Any specific reason for not venturing right next door?

erm .. no offence but Indian pilots are not that good. Aviation just started in India and they already cause us too much problems when they fly here on the radio. What happens if they start flying Emirates ? holy cow I would have to face them everyday. DAMN!

London's (lack of) control,

erm, aviation just started in India?? I thought you were joking with your age...it seems to be true...or you may have even added a few extra years.

'...and they already cause us too much problems when they fly here on the radio.' - they fly on your RADIO!!!!!!

Any chance you may be the cause of the 'too much problems' ???

Hope you control air traffic better than you write, m'friend.

Yeah sure dude because AI and 9W don't fly into London everyday.

To play devil's advocate... isn't EK losing guys to Cathay, Singapore and Qantas? They are still making a beeline into their territories.

EK has lost pilots to all of the above as well as Jet, Easy, Etihad, Korean & others returning to their old airlines. Recuitment continues with the same plus Vietnam & Air China, Kingfisher, ANA, Virgin down-under many others.

New start ups in Europe for 'open skies' and cargo will also add to the demand with a prime source of pilots coming from the ME and EK in particular.

EKs response? NOTHING, at a much greater long term cost than trying to sort the problems of pliot recruitment/retention out.

They have just sent another roadshow to the UK with the same the package as before, a package that has actually eroded by over 10% since the last time they were there! Now Colombia and anywhere else they think they can get pilots... any pilots.

Pilots leaving, not enough joining, training in disarray. It's a mess... at least Arsenal are doing well.

Standards

Is there any concern that with Emirates recent forays into previous out of bounds countries that safety might suffer in the future if it has not already?
I realize that Emirates has to fill the pilot seats but at what point do they stop lowering their standards and say enough. Duabi Inc. is much too tied to Emirates for them to chance a mishap. The dream ends for the shieks if there is a smoking hole in the ground brought upon by abismal standards and lack of training.

Just because EK attempts a foray into Colombia does not mean that they have compromised on their standards. The guys there will still have to meet the minimums. Whatever the requirements for a Brit applies to an Ozzie or a Colombian.

By your statement you are implying that hour for hour, equipment to equipment... all things being equal that pilots from Western Europe or Oz are superior to a pilots from say.... Colombia.

You might not be intending to say that but to me and i assume others thats what it sounds like.

Four months ago basic salary for me as wide body captain in sterling equated to 4285 pounds after tax NOT BAD one year ago it was even better 4700 pounds per month. But now my salary is 3973 pounds. Many Uk operators and european operators pay way more than that after tax.And are living at home.

Theses guys are not coming from those parts of the world for that kinda money anymore so its logical to go to countries where pilots still believe the package is a fortune!! However it simply becomes a revolving door system as the europeans and brits go home and the south Americans arrive!!

The exchange rate is obviously not EKs fault BUT A paultry 25 percent in pay rises in 21 years certainly is!!!!

Intersting times ahead!!

I guess I was just assuming like you were that the western civ was better than South American. After all look at your pay scales compare to Europe and America. I know your training is not up to snuff either.
The big question is in the past if you were not good enough why are you suddenly "qualified" now? It is not because your taining and standards just became good, it is a mark of the desperation at Emirates.

"South America" as you like to write, is a really big continent with a lot of different countries in it. I would agree that there are many contrasts between them but regarding aviation, is a very demanding region to fly and pilots of well established airlines have the same training standards or exceed those of "North America" and Europe.

Those pilots operate the same equipment, the same technology (of "western aviation" as you wrote) and have to face the everyday challenge of flying sometimes in non radar equipped airports, NPA´s, short and narrow runways, very high airfields (up to 13400 ft.), cold weather operations, thunderstorms, mountain wave and CAT III B ILS´s. (sometimes many of them in a single day.)

I would not accept that these pilots have lower standards, and for that reason are "cheaper" to get.
Professional standards have nothing to do with cost of living in "South America".
EK package is attractive compared to what is offered in the region, and that is why some are leaving not only for EK but for many other operators in the Middle East and Asia.

In the past, as you wrote, you rarely saw pilots from this part of the world flying abroad, but now, airlines are growing fast and pilots have more options than years ago.

I think you should not disqualify colleagues in advance just for being from another part of the world, if your skills are good and your experience adequate, the competition must be fair and the most qualified must have the right to choose, if given the opportunity, where to work.

Sincerely.

Birkerdennah,
I dont doubt the logic in your statement. However as a wide body charter captain in the uk, just survived a redundancy session , I make just a little more basic (net) than your lower figure (year 2 tri after a merger). A year 8 guy slighty moresay 4500 or 5000 with a trg increment. I dont get good trips just hard graft training the line.
The problem lies in that there are less and less places to go in europe now. With mergers (4 now 2) , redundancies (xl ,gsm) etc there are alot of guys chasing the same old same old start up 767 jobs or going loco and working their ass off in some enviroments that would make ek look like nirvarna. In continental europe the continentals have it sewn up

The established schedules dont give DEC, the smaller charters are in a permenant phugoid of boom and bust . The big charters are overcrewed.
In short if i were a younger man EK would still look like a viable alternative. I have just spoken to a colleague from my fleet who is hoping to jump ship to ek. There are still many brits waiting to join. You may want to depart on a tardi 1e if you leave as back this way is stagnant unless you are a rich cadet, like multi sector min rest days, or dont mind being buggered by a tinker.

To those of you who think EK are taking lower grade pilots i suggest you are generalising. I know of a few high quality worldwide qualified Jar capts waiting to join. I suggest they may be of a higher quality than some of the whiners on here whose only previous may possibly be a few years at EK and two hoursor one month over the min requirements for command
Keep discovering. PS say Hi to Roger Akel for me not seen him since the good old days.

If EK is conducting a road show in England and has a lots of english pilots trying to join the company that ALSO means they also are CHEAP pilots as the Colombians, no? The last time I see EK is still recruiting a lot of CHEAP and undertrained pilots from Europe, USA, Australia, NZ.
EK recruits pilots from anyplace as long you have the 4000 hs. And it is normal that the pilots that join Emirates want to make money. So it is normal that they will find more pilots willing to join in countries were wages are low compared to emirates.
But they still have guys from europe willing to jump to EK.

Thumbs up well spoken, Jose Ignacio

I fully agree with Jose Ignacio.
there is no reason to look down on south american pilots.
and there is no reason for british pilots to feel superior.

My experiences with the South Americans has been excellent. Granted it has only been 3 guys but all of them were good pilots and good guys for sure. Perhaps some people are referring to a few with less than average joining experience, I'm not sure.

Language can be a bit of an issue at times, but once again if everyone sticks to standard RT and SOP's this 'potential' threat is minimized.
