FlyingOW, interesting post. Not sure what you mean regarding 737 time being neither competitive or relevant. Are you aware that Qatar has been recruiting DECs for both the 787 and 777 for some time? If Qatar wanted 737 captains for FO positions then why not simply advertise the fact?
Some people, myself included, are in the holding pool for DEC. Now, if Qatar subsequently deems that 737 time is non-competitive or irrelevant, then so be it. However, to date, I have heard nothing to suggest anything of the sort.
Not so sure there will be a flood of people jumping at the prospect of 5 years in the right seat "gaining seniority".... for the same money you get as a captain in Europe.

EDDO,
Since I attended the interview 4 months ago, no one from my group has been called (fo & Cpt). I would imagine that Qatar simply has enough candidates in the pool who are non-type rated Boeing pilots and that they would prefer type-rated pilots. I would also imagine that Qatar would have no issues with sending out an email simply stating that we were no longer under consideration for DEC.
Personally, I'm not basing any decisions on information that doesn't come directly from Qatar recruitment. Time will tell.Good luck

Outside Europe, there will probably have a number of captains considering 5 years in the right seat, since, even as FOs, they'll make more money than as captains in their own countries.

I am referring to the fact that the Recruitment website now requires widebody experience (I.e. 737 for a Direct Entry Capt is no longer relevant) for a DEC Boeing position. I am also stating that most DEC joiners on the Triple 7 nowadays are already widebody Captains (more competitive). Current fleet growth is on the T7 and a few 747F. 737 guys were being placed on the 787 in the past. It's a question of supply and demand.
As I said I am sure things will change if/when the 737 and new 787-9 arrive.
Not saying it's impossible to join as a current narrow body Capt especially if you have previous widebody experience as an FO.

Yes, from the 3rd quarter 2018 on.
Now with the MAX order it's hard to tell what the airline is planning to do with pilots on the talent pool that are current on the 737.
Maybe the most experienced ones will go to the 777/787 and the less experienced ones to the MAX.
It's a guessing game actually as no one really knows what's being planned regarding Qatar's manpower needs.

Up to this point the 737 seemed to be slotted for ventures other than Qatar Airways, such as a new airline in India or Meridiana? Have heard rumors of them keeping them lately, but really anyone's guess.
Have heard rumors, don't know the source, that Qatar is returning the 350 to Lantam in exchange for 787-9? If true the 787 may be arriving sooner

737 Orders...
QR has only signed a Letter of Intent for the purchase of 737 aircraft. There are no aircraft on order. This means, the airline is in a status-quo.
From Boeing's website:
The airline also signed a Letter of Intent for up to 60 737 MAX 8s, valued at $6.9 billion at list prices.

The first 20 737Max are coming to QR!!
The immediate growth will be on B777 and the new 2 or 4 B747F, hence the requirement for Widebody time for Captains.

320/330
Not so. I am precisely in that situation, captain 320 lots of experience but zero time as widebody captain, did the assessment, got the invitation for dec 330. It might have to do with the political situation, I think the 320 was the most affected fleet due to the detours. Cheers

For those who already passed the assessment and are waiting in the Talent Pool, there's a WhatsApp discussion group, initially with First Officers, but now with Captains and Second Officers as well:
