Blame the Dog if the Dog Tax isn't paid....
Capt. Ed says that it is "unacceptable" if a pilot is no longer current on a CAT C airfield like the Seychelles or Sanaa.
According to him, it's obviously the pilot's fault.
Making people - who have only limited influence on the flights they are awarded - responsible for falling out of currency is like blaming my dog if I should have forgotten to pay the Dog Tax.
Bad Dog!
Sit....
(I just hope Capt. Ed doesn't hit me with a rolled newpaper.)

Yes a very interesting point, I will not be current for SEZ next month tried to get one in my Top Bid no Joy. So now it’s my fault that I am not current, so I suppose it’s off for Tea and Biscuits
Better check if I booked my sim for next month thinks that due as well

The way I see it you are only responsible if you actually fly the aircraft out of currency or qualification. If the airline has to delay the aircraft for 2 hours, because it lacks the systems and resources to ensure a properly qualified crew, then that is their problem, you have done nothing wrong. You could argue you have broken no rules until you land at the Cat-x airport in question.
Another fine example of an organization in crisis, due to rampant cost cutting.

I think what is meant, is that it is the pilot's responsibility to make the company aware of the fact that a qualification is going to lapse. It would be silly to blame the pilot for not keeping current, if his sphere of influence doesn't reach that far and if the planners don't plan properly. But it does make sense that a pilot should be responsible for at least making the planners aware that somebody has overseen something.
Afterall we are, or should be working as a team and not be out to seek blame, but to identify problem areas and find solutions. We rely on each other and as such are a team. And... there is always a solution to every problem. The outcome might not be attractive to all parties involved, but there is always a solution. I guess that's when we should change our perspective on the issue at hand.

You are quite right of course, but when i read that email i took immediate offence to the tone and wording.
I definitely felt as though we were again being blamed for management shortcomings. Those lazy pilots at it again.
Given the Mr Ed has been here about 5 minutes, i think that email was totally out of line.

Dear Capt Ed,
This is to advise you that my currency in various fields of EK operations will, at some point in time, expire. Kindly have operations monitor these and roster me accordingly.
Regards,
L.A Zee-Pilot
Wonder if this would put the ball BACK in their court?

Haven't met Capt Ed but when I saw his recent message briefly considered giving him a 'heads up' on his lack of understanding of how his Flt Ops department runs.
Then I remembered his introduction in the April newsletter and reckon there's more mileage in watching him stuff up.
His words went something like this:
'....... I believe professionalism and safety are intertwined. I am strongly supportive of those who practice both and tough on those who do not'.
Rousing stuff. Hope that he'll be having a chat with himself about his poorly researched memos.
And that reminds me of AS and his pregnant pax missive............

Well it looks like Mr Ed has bought the EK corporate culture, hook, line and sinker. Shift the blame/responsibility to the pilots, demand their professionalism and display none himself.
When is this company going to wake up to the fact that it has a duty of care for its employees and actually has to pay for a few systems to support them. Yes I know an expectation too far.
