Is JED ok for nightstops? (Safety question)
Pre-Hajj, we are all concerned about security issues in Saudi Arabia. This topic always seems to be shunted off into pprune backwaters, but IS of importance to airline employees, who are mainly flight deck in this case. Reasoned and balanced responses please.

I am doing the Hadj as well again this year, but the company decided to to an intermediate stop somewhere short of JED to change crew. Either Athens, Rhodes, Sharm-El Sheik or Hurghada.
The other gang is just doing the shuttle then to JED and than back to either of them.
Personally I think chances being robbed, raped, shot at wso in any major city in the US, South America or in Europe is even higher, than just being at that time, at that place, where a bomb is just blasting off !

Jeddah has certainly changed in the last year, most hotels have increased their security levels. Compounds housing expats are usually surrounded by concrete bollards and at least in our case armed military hummers.
I'm more concerned about getting killed in a driving accident than a terrorist act.
On a lighter note, the weather is excellent

Sorry have to disagree with Mutt the bollards are ****1ng useless but there look good.
If you are worried about coming dont come simple as that If you need the money then come but you dont have to leave the hotel when you get there
In my opinion KSA should be renamed after a certain Indian industry Bollardwood

with the inherent instability of the regime and the local paranoia about foreigners,JED or anywhere in the Kingdom not a good place unless you gotta go.
Though that can be sadly said for most of the ME these days. Making the world safe fro democracy and all that.Not quite yet.

If you're there for more than a few weeks, I'd advise to do a shopping run and get the brewing started....
You might find the last few weeks drag by otherwise....

JEDDAH, 10 November 2004 — Saudi security forces clashed with four suspected terrorists in the Al-Jamia district early yesterday morning. One terrorist was killed, and three were captured during the two-hour long siege. One of the three was a foreign national, the Interior Ministry said.

Just got done driving Sary St. & Medina Road...dangerous & crazy. Forget terrorists, the drivers still frighten me. Night-stops are only ok if road travel is avoided...worse than Teheran now.
As for Jed Airport modernization, they finally got rid of the Dulles-esque pax busses, but it's still 1965 there, even after having been open 23 years. Riyadh Airport much better (but then, terrorists there are more common; nightstops there may be much more problematical...can't win!).

It stated the attacks were to coincide with the Eid fireworks celebration, Saturday or Sunday.
I would imagine it takes more than 4 to attack a compond.
Where are the rest of them?

Excellent Idea Taildragger, but unfortunately one of the losers in the war on terror are the whiskey suppliers, the stuff is getting kinda expensive these days, cicra $300 per litre....
Better idea would be to use old grape juice bottles for the gasoline and keep the whiskey around for internal consumption when the hordes arrive.....
