JAA class 1 medical
Does anyone know where i can do a class 1 medical?
The reason i ask is because im seriously considering going to the USA to do PPL training(JAA) and i was wondering if there was any place up north near Newcastle especially that can issue/do a class 1 medical. I also want to make sure that im medically fit before i can commence training.
Also any info on the cost would be greatly appreciated!

Gatwick
I believe the only place to do a JAA Class 1 in the UK is Gatwick.
This is not the case for FAA or Canadian Class 1 medicals. They can be done at several places across the UK and are much cheaper than the JAA Initial Class 1. See FAA or Transport Canada websites for names and addresses of UK AME's

Andy,
If you're just looking at PPL, a Class Two medical will see you through it. You can get it done locally; a list of pracitioners is on the CAA website. I don't know how much it costs, think it's around the hundred quid mark.
As far as I'm aware, to solo in US airspace, you only need an FAA Class Three, which will set you back about USD 75, and should be arrangeable through any flight school over there.
If you've higher ambitions, the initial Class One can only be done at Gatwick, and will set you back 400 quid. Renewals can be done closer to home, and cost about GBP 150, as far as I know.
As for medical fitness, go easy on the booze and cigs [looks at ashtray and empty bottle, notes a lifestyle change would be good]. If your blood pressure's high, kick off an exercise plan. But for most folks, the biggest problem can be eyesight, which is a bit harder to work on. Er, do you like carrots?
Good luck.

Don't forget that FAA AME can be found in the UK.
http://www1.faa.gov
Under "Certification" select 'people'
Under "Training & Testing" select 'Medical Examiner Locater'
Then select the Uk and have a look.
It appears your closest one is in Grimsby 01472 234597
E.R.Allan 1st Class AME # 15693
Give the guy a call.
As Crepello said, Initial JAR Class 1 only at Gatwick £400. (ouch)

It might be an idea to have your eyes tested at you local optician if you are worried. You can get the eyesight limits from the caa srg website and your optician will tell you if you will pass. It costs a lot less than 400 quid.
Just one other tip. When you see the word "relax" on the ceiling, you will wonder why it's there. But not for long!

I had my Canadian Class 1 Initial done with the AME listed above (Grimsby). I beleive he is a retired GP. I had the ECG done while laying on his leather sofa!! A bit different to the clinical CAA at Gatwick!

stud3 seems to look for a class 2 medical only.
for anyone looking to do a class 1 medical, here is how I did it: got myself an FAA class 1 medical (was $60), then went to my Aeromedical Examiner, who only did a renewal (the CAA UK examiner in Hamburg / Germany took €110 and threw in a free FAA medical aswell!)
You may check with your AME wether you can do your FAA medical, then renew / upgrade to a JAA medical straight away. - Don't know wether that is possible though.
The CAA Gatwick didn't like the above procedure but accepted it.
Another way: if you do not need a class one straight away, but just want to check if you could get it before going to do some US flying, book your flight to the US with Lufthansa and on your stop over in Frankfurt, do your German class one. - There is no initial, all examinations are identical. When you renew, it is a JAR medical after 1st May 2003. Cost: around €110.
Jet Breeze: If the CAA webpage states that initial JAA can only be done in the UK, then they are mistaken. A BA Captain told me the other day, that some of their initials were done in the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin. Also, the Aeromedical Centre in Amsterdam has JAA authorisation to conduct these examinations, aswell as the one in Stockholm. And I'm sure, the French wouldn't agree either.

Things seem to be getting a little tangled here -
ANY JAA medical is now valid for a JAA licence - irrespective of which JAA country issued the medical and which country issues the pilots licence.
If you elect to do this through the UK CAA - then (I believe) the only place to get a UK CAA INITIAL class one is through CAA Gatwick - renewals can be done anywhere. I do my renewals, here, in Florida.
If Stud3 wants to go 'professional' then it's a darned good idea to get the class one first - also a really good idea to go through each of the tests with local medics/opticians etc. first if there is any doubt about passing it with the UK CAA.
UK CAA can also issue you with an FAA class three if you ask them at the time!!! Save you doing another medical in USA.
DONT FORGET TO ASK FOR STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE WHEN DOING INITIAL FAA MEDICAL!!!!
