Phlebitis
My MD just diagnosed this in my right leg, condition is in a superficial vein, leg slightly swollen, very slight reddening in skin, good pulse in foot, ultrasonic scan shows no problems in deeper veins/arteries (nice flow and flexible walls) so says not serious - but it hurts.
Treatment is oral anti-coag., thrombosis cream, massage with NovaFon unit, damp warm compress.
Anyone had this and how long did it last ?

oh you poor old sausage.
beware of doctors using vague latin names for ailments.
sounds like you are developing a varicose vein.
these occur when the little one way valves in the vein fail.
then the next one fails and the next one fails and so on until the next one doesn't fail. they hurt for a while. you develop a permanently swollen vein which means that you aren't quite the adonis down on the nude beach.
cant be fixed.
most of us oldies have them.

Had it in both legs, actually worse as was diagnosed with thrombosis in both legs post orthopaedic surgery. Is sore for a while but will fade fairly soon.
Actually varicose veins can be fixed by having them sealed off and removed. It sounds horrible but in fact is almost entirely painless and not at all debilitating. Had mine done under local anaesthesia which was fascinating.
This is not a big deal.

A varicose vein (being a swollen semi-external vein with blood flowing through it, and painless) is something quite dfferent from phelebitis (a vein blocked with a clot under the surface, and painful). I've had varicose veins for the past ten years: the phlebitis is something new. Hence my question.
My dad had varicose veins all his life: walked hundreds of miles a year in his eighties, never had 'em fixed.
One quarter of the way thru my packet of anticoagulants now: probably too early to moan about it not going away.
Update; 10 days after I first experienced it, has started to go. Much smaller area is now hard and sore. Only half way thru the antcoagulant tablets but will continue.
