Hip replacement

Anyone know any pilots who've had a hip replacement. How long were they off, any complications with Caa, any rigorous testing or straight forward.????

Thanks in anticipation

if you are fit enough and no complications then three months should hopefully see you back in the air. Good luck.

Time off will depend on what type of hip replacement it is, ie. the type that uses cement to fix it or the one which has a serrated edge which the bone is left to grow around.
If the latter (which I have had for more than 20 years) I would suggest it would be about 6 months off, as you are not allowed to put ANY pressure on the leg for 3 months after the surgery, then the muscles are so weak you will need about 3 months of physiotherapy.
Once it's all over, though, there shouldn't (barring complications) be any problem with re-certification. The range of movement is checked every medical, that's all.

The NHS has just brought in a protocol for the testing of metallic ions in the blood after certain types of hip surgery. This requires a blood test and an MRI scan if the ions are raised. It's a new enough development so that there are no long term statistics available on how evil a blood stream full of ions might be. Whether the CAA pick up on that and require such testing to be compulsory probably depends on whether someone from their medical section reads this post.

They don't generally red this forum, they're too busy golfing.
