class I medical lasts for how long?

I only know about the JAA (Joint Aviation Authorities) medical certificate and so my answers relate only to that.
a) I see no reason why you can't have a class 1 and never be a pilot - When I went for my class 1 medical examination they never asked me if I intended becoming a pilot. However, the initial JAA class 1 medical examination costs nearly 400 UKP (110,000 pesetas!!) and so having one when you don't need one is a waste of money.
b) There are several basic tests in the JAA class 1 (Heart, Lungs, Brain! etc) and during the initial examination they do them all. After that you have to re-take at least one of the tests each year in order to renew the certificate (there's a schedule for this on the certificate). So I guess then that the JAA medical certificate can never be valid for more that one year.
