a lot of people in the West get Chinese characters tattooed without checking the meaning. Most of the time they just say 
off lao wei" but if yours says off Chairman Mao" or something similar, you might have a problem. Anyway, you've got to be a retard to have a tattoo in the first place and I think they have regulations about retards operating aircraft in China.

made me howl, but a little unfair perhaps Wrong Way?I'm trying to work out the medical significance of tattoos, and can't.
In theory, you've exposed yourself to a higher risk of blood bourne nasties (hepb &c spring to mind), but, despite the Department of Healths posters, I suspect that the risk is minimal.

I don't think the original post stipulated whether or not the tattoos were "Chinese characters", I think the poster was referring to how the Chinese authorities view tattoos.
As for the "retard" comment, if it does hold any truth within China, i'd dear say that you (WrongWayCorrigan) will not be in the pointy end of an aircraft anytime soon. Well maybe to clean the windows.

It ill befits threaders to insult and abuse someone who seems to be asking for an answer to this issue. Some comments are plain stupid as from what I see Tattos have reached endemic proportions world wide and it will soon be a case for excluding those persons who do not sport at least one. I doubt you have any concerns at all.

Tattoos and regulations
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could help with a question i have about tattoos. I am an aspiring comercial pilot but would like to get a small tattoo on the front of my hip partially covered by the waist line. Would this be a problem for the medical? Also, when the time comes for the interviews (assuming it is obviously well hidden by my trousers/shirt and suite) of them finding out? I know about the policy on visable tattoos i.e. forbiden, but what about a very concealed one? Would they have any way of finding out about it or even caring about it. Obviously my future career means a hell of a lot to me and i wouldnt dream of jepordising it so I just want to do all my homework before making a decision. Thanks.

From the purely medical point of view it's simply not an issue (always assuming that you didn't catch something nasty by getting a tattoo done in an unhygienic place !)
Potential employers might be unhappy with tattoos that were visible while wearing normal working clothes (uniform). They could never know about any which were not thus visible. In my job I see plenty of tattoos that friends and colleagues are probably not aware of ! I also know that many of them are now bitterly regretted !
Personally, I still can't see why they are done at all . . . . . . . . . but it's personal choice, as always.
