Allergy to dust- Class 1 medical
Hi all
I have done a search on this but cant seem to find a lot of information.
I will be doing the Class 1 medical soon and was wondering if anyone give me more information about passing the medical with an allergy to dust. I have got a history of asthma but I am confident i can pass on this as I do not suffer anymore and do not take any inhalers.
Would greatly appreciate any information anyone could give me
Cheers

Allergy
Hi HomerJay
I had a very bad allergy to dust as a child, and still carry the remnants of it with me today. I have an inhaler and use it once in a while. Also allergic to cats. I am not crippled by it and its when exposed to lotsa dust and cat saliva which affects me.
Passed my Class1 no bother. Thet figured cockpits were relatively dust free, no worse than any other office, and the likelyhood of it being filled with cats was highly improbable.
Therefore, u should be ok, but every medical is an individual thing.
If u don't suffer now from it, I would say you will be good to go.
Good luck with it. The Staff at Air Medical Centre in the Matter Hospital are or at least were the last time I visited extreemly pleasant and helpful.
Cheers

Hi,
I am also allergic to dust/pollen. I fly 737. Everyday the hole year I take one allergy pill. The names is 'Clarityn/Loratadin'. This pill is authorised for flying, and I have coordinated the usage with the CAA medical folks.
I consider the medicine very effective with no side effects

There are also nasal spyays you can use if you do get any symptoms - Beconase, Flixonase etc. There are lots of things on the CAA approved list of meds that should stop you from having any problems.

Perennial Rhinitis - Like a year-round hayfever, caused by allergies to dust mites and pets.
Minimise by not having pets, and dusting as regularly as possible (use a duster that attracts and holds dust.)
On prescription you can get Cetrizine. A one-a-day tablet which should reduce the prblem.

Did class 1 in matter a few weeks ago.
Ear nose and throat doc commented that i was allergic to dust and no more was said.
With regards to the asthma, I have been referred to a specialist as i did not pass pulmanary function test (heavily blowing into a tube with your nose clamped). If you are worried about this the doctor in the matter suggested blowing into a toilet roll tube or someting similar as hard as possible. If you want your G.P. should have a tube more or less the same as the one used in the matter.
In my case dust wasn't an issue rather the asthma.
Hope it goes well. They make you feel very at ease and you can listen to pilots take the piss out of each others company while you wait for the next test
