Army Specialist Aviation Medics (SAMS)

Hello all,

Appreciate that this should ideally be an area for question related to medical and health, but since all you docs probably hang out in the this area then thought this would be the ideal place to post this.

I'm currently in my second year of basic surgical training (painfully doing my second A&E job) and have been thinking of switching to a career in aviation since I started med school. However, over the past couple of years I have heard rumours that the Army has SAMs - Specialist Aviation Medics!?!?

The army careers service seem to know very little about this and am struggling to find anyone who can give me any information. I have a few questions that I'd appreciate some help with.

Do any of you guys know if SAMs really do exist?

What is the career path?

Are any of you guys SAMs and if so, how do you like it?

I understand the navy also has some docs who fly - does anyone know anything about this?

Would appreciate your help guys.

Speedy

The best person for you to speak to is the Army's consultant advisor in AV Med. May still be Malcolm Braithwaite I don't know. He will be at the home of Army flying, Middle Wallop. I'm sure he won't mind you phoning him. Don't wait around thinking of changing careers, you can always go back to medicine in the future but flying needs to be done young if you are to get anywhere. I now fly full time and love it and do a little part time medicine as an insurance policy in case I need to go back!
Good luck.

The Aeromedical List is a good site to look at. It has a useful mailing list and discussion forum for all aspects of aviation medicine. There are Army, and ex-Army, aviation medicine specialists on there who will probably be willing to give you some advice.

Good luck.
