I have read the previous posts from people who have suffered from this but I am hoping for some up to date info.
Has anyone seen a neurosurgeon for this problem?
Has anyone been in surgery recently?
Thank in advance for any replies.

I am a pilot not a doctor, but I have a huge amount of reference data available in my office. The subject is so variable in nature–every case being different–that one would need more detailed question to be of much help. Please state your location...and some more details.
An osteopath / chiropractor can work miracles, but if you really feel that there may be a damaged disc, be very cautious about manipulation. Rotational movement can exacerbate the effects of an annular tear.
There is no substitute for an MRI., but re image quality, sometimes in the UK, a private hospital does not provide such a good result as the NHS. Try to gain some info on the system used. LR
