Popular AME?

Just tried to book an appointment for a Class 2 Renewal with the AME I always used when I previously lived in Dorset (after a 3 year period in Scotland). Got told that 'all the appointments for Jan have been issued and he won't be able to see you until Feb'.

Was a bit surprised, as (due to birthday being close after Xmas and my medical expiry having become my birthday since my 40th) I usually just ring up shortly after Xmas and get a choice of dates in Jan.

Does this indicate that I've just got a popular AME, or is the number of medicals being issued rising? This AME is 10 miles from me - the next nearest is 23 miles, also I'm not flying anyway at the moment, so am not in that much of a rush.

After several promises that I would get a call from the receptionist for this AME, I never heard a thing and have now scheduled an appt with another AME (who is around 15 miles further away - his cost for Class 2 renewal with ECG is £149 ).

Is there an agreed Service Level Agreement with the CAA for AMEs or can they pretty much treat their customers as they wish?

Circuit Basher,

I suspect that I use the same AME as you and I am waiting to hear from the receptionist for a medical before mid March. I think that the AME is away and not due back until early March.

He probably is popular because he does a good job and, being a PPL himself, he doesn't charge the earth for it. I had a slight problem last year and he was very helpful.

I get the impression that, as a busy GP, he only devotes a few days a month to AME work but I could be wrong.

Pulse1 - used to go to the 'Forum' for mine, IYSWIM. No problems with te AME himself - good guy, interesting to talk to, knew his stuff, but have still not had a response to 4 messages left wishing to book an appointment where I was promised that his receptionist would call me.

Have had to book with an AME up Somerset way, which is a nuisance, being 22 miles away and costing £149 (not sure what the charges are these days for my usual).
