Talking Health in General

Well its that time of year for me were we put livelihood on the line and take the renewal medical class one.

Just wondering Class one medicals just how strict are they?
Would most of the population in the UK pass. I ask not because I take my health for granted quite the opposite in fact. I do stress somewhat and that does seem to show when they take my bloody pressure. But in today's society of noise polluton, and stressful lifestyles just what does the examiner allow for wear and tear in the course of a human life to keep his career going?

Hopefully with some fortnunate luck I have 25yrs left till retirement so you cant expect a thirty year old to have the same fitness of course compared to a 55yr old, however.

Sensible comments about the human body welcome.

Would most of the population in the UK pass (class 1 medical)

OK, nobody who knows the answer has replied, so lets have some wild ass guesses.

I think almost 20% of the UK working population are considered long term disabled, so should fail, but then I bet if some were offered a job as a pilot a few might suddenly recover. Another 4% (approx) could fail in the UK because of colour blindness!!!!!! There will be some with other problems which are only discovered for the first time at class 1 medical (for instance these echos we always hear about will pick up a few unknown congenital heart defects) but I doubt there are many, lets say 1%.

So lets say 25% of the working population would fail quickly, how many of the remaining 75% would pass?

A primary care provider, of which there are several on this board, would be the best to ask. They see people coming through the door all the time, the vast majority of whom will get better on their own in two weeks, but I'd guess very few who are not already in the 20% disabled have problems which would cause them to fail a medical. Anyway, lets add another 10% for a guess.

That means 35% will fail, my elementary maths says 65% will pass. A bit close to 'most', which is 50% + 1.

Just goes to show how unhealthy we are as a society.

The old joke is that if you can walk into an FAA medical under your own steam, and say hello to the doctor instead of the hatstand, you will pass. Seems fair enough to me..

(Edited to change colour blind figure, I used male only figure, very sexist of me. Further corrections likely)

DD, depends on how you measure health.

Just had a patient in, chronic chest complaint, breathless, heart disease, smokes 20 a day, but can still manage to get to the local to meet his mates for happy hour. I asked him if he has any worries about his health, he say's not. He considers himself quite healthy.

I have a regular who eats the "right stuff" , exercises the prescribed 3 times a week, doesn't smoke/drink. Great blood pressure, normal BMI. Her sister and mum both died of breast cancer. She doesn't sleep very well, and cries all the time, as her husband has left her.

Got another guy, paralysed from the waist down, top wheelchair basket ball player. Drinks a bit too much, but lives life to the full. (His words not mine.)

Which one is the healthiest ?

(Answers on a postcard to "CAA Medical division, Gatwick Airport.")
