OASC Failed - Stereovision
Last week I failed my OASC medical as a result of not having the required 'stereovision', the ability to determine the magic eye circles. I managed two, but couldnt do the other two and was told I have 480 degrees of arc and not the 120 degrees.
Strangely I passed the same test three years ago for UAS entry yet was told the President of the medical board it was a 'have it or not' type quality. However am unsure of whether if at a different time, or different place I would get the same result.
Anyone got any information on this and whether a normal opticians carries out such a test. If so, and I was to pass it, is there a precedent for the medical examiners opinion being overturned. Also SL Duncan asked me to choose another branch, as I passed all apptitudes and interview, and could continue from Stage 2 of OASC. As such the OASC door is still open so even if medical opinion is not overturned does anyone know if it would be possible for me to take medcal again without re-applying?
What is the situation with Civil Aviation with regards to such problems? Finally, on a seperate point, what are the dioptre limits of Civil Aviation?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Some people find it difficult to retain full stereopsis when they are tired.
AFAIK the CAA does not require any stereopsis tests (but I am not an CAA AME) The FAA does for class 1 and 2 medicals.
Limits for initial issuance for a class 1 for the CAA are -5 and renewal -8 (Can't remember but thought it was +3 if you are longsighted)
Good luck with pursuing your goal.

I had to fight hard to get a Class 1 medical for civilian flying and had my eyes tested several times by all sorts of opthalmological bods. As FD says, I don't think stereoscopic vision features in the CAA medical (it didn't when I went through the system), however, mine was tested by the non-CAA specialists I consulted, using two different methods, with wildly differing results. One of the Consultants I visited was an RAF eye specialist who used 3-D picture cards (I couldn't see any pictures!) and I failed miserably. However, on at least two other occasions, I was tested using the "targets" or "circles" method and passed by a good margin. Any High Street Optician will do the test for you.
