Exactly. In the US you are blacklisted if you join certain airlines that provide insulting conditions like this, very soon those offering them change the offer when they realise no one is joining them. It works. The trouble in Europe is the people chasing the 'dream' whilst not realising they are about to run off a cliff. The 'dream' actually turns out to be a nightmare, all because of their own doing and feeding this system. |

Well that is the point people are trying to make to these cadets currently. The stepping stone no longer exists because no one is moving on. Ryanair will continue to lower the bar as long as people sign up. Ryanair have already said the cost is going up next year! What will remain in years to come? 100k to join as a zero hour contractor just because you put yourself in that position? Undertaking flight training without proper due diligence is reckless and selfish. |
But that’s just the point, you won’t be working for Ryanair. You’ll be left with 130k worth of debt and back working for Nando’s after working your ass off for nothing through summer. You’ll then also have a pretty expensive TR to renew at your own expense.
If you think either BA or EZ will be recruiting anytime soon you’ve gotta be joking!! Also it’s usually not as simple as just moving on, there’s a comprehensive assessment process for both those two airlines that is competitive, it’s unlike the pay-yer-money ryr assessment. Just so you know. |
Ask the same 1000 pilots in 10 years time if the risk was worth the reward when they’re sat on unpaid leave whilst fellow skygods buy their hours.

That's new information for me, that it only takes 1 year to become a pilot. Just because the airlines have lowered the bar for giving you a job, does not mean that you can call yourself a competent pilot coming out of flight school with a few hundred hours.
This is part of the problem, they want cheap labour, who are willing to pay to continue their training. Because that is what the first few years are with an airline, it's advanced training of an airliner, where the student pays for their own TR, and accepts a crappy contract. You also seem to be missing the point regarding the "stepping stone", for the majority there will no longer be any "stepping stones" - These LOCO airlines are becoming career airlines, as there are not many jobs out there that can be considered much greater or with much better TC's. I mean go to BA, and live in a suitcase for the rest of your life. It is what it is unfortunately. |
AFAIK bar is where it was all the time. 0-ATPL training programs are more or less the same during long years. You mean first years in an airline as and advanced training, but when was it differ?

If you count 4-5 years as a First Officer working as an apprentice in the RHS, then it more accurately reflects the time taken to qualify by lawyers, doctors etc.

I just want to ask the folks a provocative question: If Ryr offered the same identical scheme, without asking any money (no 30k upfront), with the same terms and conditions (no job guarantee, possibility to be grounded for a while, etc. etc.), would the folk still be complaining about the scheme itslef ? Especially experienced pilot, with a flying job before covid ? |
Some of the posters on here should not be allied to our industry. Bitter and crying people complaint that other want to be pilots, oh it's not fair they are buying their way into flying and pushing us out. They are taking my job or lowering my cash or opportunities. Get real, life is tough. Anyone who just views our job as means to provide a living shouldn't be here. Aviation is a way of life, it's a brilliant industry. It's not perfect and is very susceptible to changes as is demonstrated by our turbulent history.
If you want to be a pilot in today's world, you know it's not going to be like the old days, fabulous money and lifestyle. It's a tough old world and being a pilot had its demands. Challenging times we all know. The pathetic cry's of no stepping stones, of course there will always be movement. In fact I would expect that RyanAir will be forced to improve conditions as their expansion program will leave them short of crew if they fail to retain their experienced guys. The big issue here for us pilots are the senior guys off the long haul sector will have real difficulties in getting sorted in the SH sector. Wiz, Ezy, FR aren't looking for ex 777, 380 people and never will. Whilst our aviation industry will bounce back there will be casualties but the SH will be more resistant and FR particularly be the most active due to their style of management. Ruthless fare cutters and operating with the lowest cost and the latest fleet. Efficiency unparalleled at this moment and two big advantages for pilots, solid roster with 5 4 and home every night. No wonder they recruit cadets. |

Didn't express my view on becoming a pilot just for the money. Sleep is one third of your life, another 3rd is spent working and the job you select can make that third miserable, seems that we have a few on these forums. Just don't bother with a path to a flight deck if you are looking for money. Seen many and will continue to see these guys, no passion, moan moan moan. Money, money no money, no time off no holidays when I want them, all they do is cry. Simple just get out of the business. I welcome any young passionate guys looking to live their dream, it may not turn out as they think but many have warned them, if they read these forums. Aviation today is for the truly dedicated. Crap terms in general to what it was so go and take another path for a living. Just a general comment. |

Student pilot : "Hi i would like to take a loan out of 100k to complete my flight training." Bank: "Sure ok no problem, what repayment schedule would you like?" Student pilot: "I can pay by dreams and dedication." Bank: "Sorry thats not going to work for us." Student pilot: "Hmmmmmm." Ryanair pilot: "Id like to buy this house please." Nobody can stop you feeling more passionately about it but, it’s just a job. It’s not a way of life. I do no GA flying. I take passengers from A-B and eventually from B-A. When I clock out for days off, I’m not dreaming of being a sky god for a few days. As much as I’ve argued with the bank, they will not accept passion/hopes/dreams/delusions as mortgage payments |

If flying is just a job, nothing more, (let's say also stressful, boring, hard, with high responsibility, etc.), why have you taken a 100k+ loan for that ?
Did you get your training for free ? Were you 100% sure to get into a liner after the "frozen" ATPL, 5 -10 -20 years ago ? If the answer is yes, that's make sense to me, otherwise I can't see any reason for going for it, if it's just a job. Or maybe it's more than a job, and there are other factors, like passion / interest for this kind of career. |
