Ryanair selection

Ok, I was contacted by a CAE pilot recruiter. She was asking various questions about my training such as first time IR pass ect and we came onto the question:

"Did you pass all your ATPL groundscool exams first time".

Now my average is 89% even with the 2 failed exam marks included. These retakes led to my application being rejected. Are Ryanair being particuarly picky at the moment or has this always been the case that if you fail a groundschool exam your not good enough?

Roope 9th Feb 2012 13:29

That's pretty much how it goes. There are like 2000 people wanting to become RYR Cadets, while they only have like 40 places, obviously they are going to filter as much as they can, to get only the very best.

t0m1303 9th Feb 2012 13:46

Thought that would be the case. I have heard of one guy who took 3 attempts to pass his CPL and 2 times for his IR, he did however pass all his exams first time with 92% average, he got employed by RYR- any logic in this? Or just desperation at the time they were recruiting?

Hi Tom,

I would have to agree with the above. It's a recruiters market, they can recruit anyone, from anywhere and from any solar system.

I know it's not nice to hear but that's the truth and will stay like that for the foreseeable future.

2000 unemployed pilots, maybe even more, who knows.

"Sorry" and I hope you get something else.

t0m1303 9th Feb 2012 13:59

Yea I agree- I knew landing my first jet job would always be tough, was trying to understand if there was any specifics they were after!

Doesn't that number seem rather low?. I know one FTO from where there is quite a steady stream of students being called for an interview.

Ryanair

Could anyone shed some light on what questions are asked over the phone when CAE call you?

Is it like a telephone interview? or is it more of just general questions?

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Roope 9th Feb 2012 16:12

The 2000 number comes from RYR's road show just a few days ago in my country. I believe that can be considered official.
The 40 is what I heard from some class mates, don't put your neck on it. However, I'd point out that there's a huge difference between being invited for an interview and actually being offered a permanent contract.

Da-20 monkey 9th Feb 2012 16:22

Thanks Roope, I guess RYR recruitment is just a mysterious business.

Having first passes in eveything is just the start of the story. Rumor has it that quite a few people fail the simride.

muten 9th Feb 2012 17:31

RYR allows only one exam re-take and an average score of 88%

t0m1303 9th Feb 2012 17:34

Thanks muten, is there any exceptions to this or is that it?

Da-20 monkey 9th Feb 2012 17:46

Muten, I never heard this before. Are you sure? Do you have to have 88% average even if you have first time passes?

I don't even know my own scores anymore.. though i think around 88%..

muten 10th Feb 2012 09:41

This is the only info I have regarding the minimums ryanair asks, I don't know more details or if they are allowed to lower it (which I would like to know myself, because I have passed the 14 subjects in a single call, but with an average of 85%)

This info comes from another forum where I post regularly, a guy working in a training department in ryr asked a friend of his working in HR. I think the info is legit, as a couple of days after he posted it, a guy here in pprune said he was called by ryr for the assessment even though he had failed one exam. So there's no reason to believe the 88% minimum is not true. (I trust the guy in the other forum, as he's been posting there since 2007)

We know CAE ask if you have failed any exam in the phone call, the question now is if they also ask you the average score prior the assessment.

Da-20 monkey 10th Feb 2012 12:58

Thanks Muten,

Perhaps they changed the requirements slightly in response to the recent problem with the new- syllabus Flight Performance exam? (The one that no- one managed to pass )

In that case that would be fair I guess..

t0m1303 10th Feb 2012 14:15

When I got the call there was no mention of what average you got just if they had been passed first time, so 75% average first time passes your onto a winner!

dxd888 21st Feb 2012 14:22

I would like to clarify that selection during the call from CAE seems to be based mainly on 3 things:

ATPL results - only 1 retake allowed and no average mark was mentioned

CPL and IR+ME - You need first time passes or first series passes. I dont think they will take fails

And finally if you are currently flying - They seem to be quite happy with FIs

Good luck to all

Oh and if your Irish forget about it...

sellect 22nd Feb 2012 00:47

Don't believe everything you hear. Have a good friend who got hired with a fail in his IR

McBruce 22nd Feb 2012 17:44

Does a fail show on the certificates that you get from the CAA? If not: then you passed all. They lead by example. All the top brass in RYR have lied under oath! :E

benish 6th Jun 2012 11:16

I've failed 4 exams and got my IR coming up.

Is there anyway Ryanair can find out your results from the CAA?!
