Ryanair selection
Ok, I was contacted by a CAE pilot recruiter. She was asking various questions about my training such as first time IR pass ect and we came onto the question:
"Did you pass all your ATPL groundscool exams first time". Now my average is 89% even with the 2 failed exam marks included. These retakes led to my application being rejected. Are Ryanair being particuarly picky at the moment or has this always been the case that if you fail a groundschool exam your not good enough? |
That's pretty much how it goes. There are like 2000 people wanting to become RYR Cadets, while they only have like 40 places, obviously they are going to filter as much as they can, to get only the very best.
|
Thought that would be the case. I have heard of one guy who took 3 attempts to pass his CPL and 2 times for his IR, he did however pass all his exams first time with 92% average, he got employed by RYR- any logic in this? Or just desperation at the time they were recruiting?

Hi Tom,
I would have to agree with the above. It's a recruiters market, they can recruit anyone, from anywhere and from any solar system. I know it's not nice to hear but that's the truth and will stay like that for the foreseeable future. 2000 unemployed pilots, maybe even more, who knows. "Sorry" and I hope you get something else. |
Yea I agree- I knew landing my first jet job would always be tough, was trying to understand if there was any specifics they were after!

Ryanair
Could anyone shed some light on what questions are asked over the phone when CAE call you?
Is it like a telephone interview? or is it more of just general questions? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks! |
The 2000 number comes from RYR's road show just a few days ago in my country. I believe that can be considered official.
The 40 is what I heard from some class mates, don't put your neck on it. However, I'd point out that there's a huge difference between being invited for an interview and actually being offered a permanent contract. |
Thanks Roope, I guess RYR recruitment is just a mysterious business.
Having first passes in eveything is just the start of the story. Rumor has it that quite a few people fail the simride. |
RYR allows only one exam re-take and an average score of 88%
|
Thanks muten, is there any exceptions to this or is that it?
|
RYR allows only one exam re-take and an average score of 88% I don't even know my own scores anymore.. though i think around 88%.. |
This is the only info I have regarding the minimums ryanair asks, I don't know more details or if they are allowed to lower it (which I would like to know myself, because I have passed the 14 subjects in a single call, but with an average of 85%)
This info comes from another forum where I post regularly, a guy working in a training department in ryr asked a friend of his working in HR. I think the info is legit, as a couple of days after he posted it, a guy here in pprune said he was called by ryr for the assessment even though he had failed one exam. So there's no reason to believe the 88% minimum is not true. (I trust the guy in the other forum, as he's been posting there since 2007) We know CAE ask if you have failed any exam in the phone call, the question now is if they also ask you the average score prior the assessment. |
Thanks Muten,
Perhaps they changed the requirements slightly in response to the recent problem with the new- syllabus Flight Performance exam? (The one that no- one managed to pass ) In that case that would be fair I guess.. |
When I got the call there was no mention of what average you got just if they had been passed first time, so 75% average first time passes your onto a winner!
|
I would like to clarify that selection during the call from CAE seems to be based mainly on 3 things:
ATPL results - only 1 retake allowed and no average mark was mentioned CPL and IR+ME - You need first time passes or first series passes. I dont think they will take fails And finally if you are currently flying - They seem to be quite happy with FIs Good luck to all |
Oh and if your Irish forget about it...
|
Don't believe everything you hear. Have a good friend who got hired with a fail in his IR
|
Does a fail show on the certificates that you get from the CAA? If not: then you passed all. They lead by example. All the top brass in RYR have lied under oath! :E
|
I've failed 4 exams and got my IR coming up.
Is there anyway Ryanair can find out your results from the CAA?! |
Do people just lie to them? My final results sheet shows 5 different pass dates as I spread out my re sits. I could just "Photoshop" the sheet and would they be any the wiser?! If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime. Can you afford to lose close to £30k in the event they find out that you were bullsh*ing and you end up with no where near 500 hours total time? If you can take the gamble, give it a go but before you do, let me know who you are so that I avoid the pleasure of flying with you. |
Theres huge pressure on me and mostly all of us to find a job out there. Big training debts, young age, family, bills etc etc etc. Some times people will do things in desperation and take a gamble.
I doubt I'd ever take that gamble, I'm too honest. I'm just interested to know if people have ever lied to them and if people have found ways round it. Oh and I'd be a pleasure to fly with :O You don't know me you can't make that assumption! |
Anyone who's willing to cheat isn't worth flying with, or employing. It really isn't hard for RYR to contact your FTO to verify your results.
The only person who put you under this pressure is yourself benish. you signed the dotted. No one forced you. You may have to fid something else in the mean time that isnt a main stream airline. OR you may find another airline that doesn't mind a few failures in GS exams. At the moment all airlines that are recruiting, are only calling for selection those with the best results. |
when contacted for interview there is a requirment to have a flight school report and this will include your ATPL results. so if you havent put the work in and failed them then you should have thought about that when preparing for your exams.
|
There is no justification for dishonesty in an application for a job where your skills and knowledge are the difference between surviving a minor incident and causing a serious accident involving multiple, perhaps hundreds, of fatalities.
Professional aviation is not Flightsim. |

Photoshopping your documents would be forgery, you could be sent to prison for that, and yes, they will find out, if they do proper research afterwards, and the chances that they do that after selection and before hiring you is big, as you also need a security clearance. I think you should try and see what happens, at least if get nicked you don't need to worry about getting a security clearance in the future! I do know of guys who failed 2 of their ATPL's, and they did get interview with Ryanair, but they did not pass selection. I also know of guys who partialled their IR, and had interview, by the way they also did not pass selection. So one thing is getting interview, what happens after I don;t know, the ones I know who got in, all had first time passes, even though I heard a rumour that 90% avr. on ATPL was needed, I do know of guys with much less average who have been selected recently. |
I heard of a guy from my FTO who was the wrong side of 30, partialed both CPL and IR but apparently passed all his ATPLs with a high %. He got in.
But that was a few years back and I think they're more selective now. |
... Photoshopping ... I'm also desperate to find a job but how can you think about this not mentioning you even ask the public opinion on this matter. Damn.
I must tell you are certainly very creative and hope you are even a better decision maker because in the end you will only cheat yourself. |
I'm just interested to know if people have ever lied to them and if people have found ways round it. Not saying you should do it...but this guy's got away with it. |

You should not believe everything people tell you! One thing is to lie about it, another thing is to produce forged documents! I for one, would despise anybody who would do something like that, than again anybody who would sink that low would have to be a failure and a looser anyway! |
