Flybe Dash Simulator Assessment

Hello,

I am trying to find as much information as I can regarding the Flybe simulator assessment for entry onto the Dash 8 fleet.

Through various sources such as the IPA I have so far been told that the simulator is Cabair's FNTP II based at Cranfield. The likely route is a Gatwick Seaford SID followed by general handling and an ILS.

Has anyone recently completed the sim ride who can confirm whether my information is correct/up to date and who can provide any other information.

Kind Regards

Hi there

Details pretty much correct, don't know first hand but had a friend of mine go through the sim a few months ago.
Why not give cabair a shout they will fill you in with the details.
Out of curiosity have you been interviewed recently? have been trying to get a look in myself for over a year
All the best and keep us all posted,

FF

Your information is correct, the sim assesment is carried out at cranfield by cabairs head sim instructor who is a really nice guy. The route does generally consist of a SID and approach at Gatwick. All of the info about the flight including profile, plates and speeds are sent to you before hand.

They are not looking for anything special, just someone who shows competence, so don't worry to much. Pass the sim assesment and you will have a job offer. The sim instructor is very fair and will pretty much talk you through the whole thing.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Flying Farmer & Artificial Horizon

Thank you both very much for your replies.

Flying Farmer,

Unfortunately I haven't got an interview date yet. The story so far is that a friend of mine who flies for Flybe kindly sent my CV to them along with a reference. He has had a reply indicating that I would be interviewed when vacancies next arise (expected around the autumn). I have also been in touch with them and was told something similar. I guess I am jumping the gun a little but with so few opportunities available I am very keen to prepare as much as possible just in case I do get a sim ride.

I thought of giving Cabair a call but wasn't sure whether it would be frowned upon i.e. I would have had an unfair advantage. Mind you, at the end of the day the can only say 'no'. Ideally, I would like to try and get some time on the actual sim. I have been given the contact name of Tim Sharland at Cabair, who I have been told may be able to help.

good luck

Your info on the sim assesment is correct, Gatwick departure, general handling steep turns etc... etc then hold and an ILS back into Gatwick.

I also contacted Cabair to enquire about the possibility of doing a bit of practice and they were very clear that this wasn't aloud.
Which is fair enough as the whole thing would lose its integrity if you were able to practice on the sim before hand.

As far as the sim is concerned its easy enough to operate very stable in pitch neutraly stable in roll with an excellent electric trim.

Get yourself on Micosoft flight sim and beast the Kingair around the profile for a few hours at 220kts and you'll be fine.

Assuming you get through the interview, best of luck matey.

Be as prepared as possible; The sim can catch you out if you are unfamiliar so I'd suggest getting your hands on one elsewhere if you can.

my sim at Cabair was a SID from GCI (an ORTAC 2W i think...) to the first waypoint, then some needle tracking followed by raw data ILS into Jersey.

I'm currently on the Dash 8 fleet in Jersey..... but the other people there that day had the same profile, and they weren't for jersey.

Instructor was great - asked whether i'd like to fly it single or 2 crew.........!!! If you can't rember your power settings then get your PNF to do it for you!!

best of luck..... we need the pilots.

Thank you all for the information provided above which has been very useful and very much appreciated.

Out of interest, PPJN recently updated the Flybe Turboprop section with some details of the actual interview. The description is as follows:

"Relaxed interview with the fleet manager, personnel manager and probably the flight ops admin manager. Typical qn’s include knowledge of the company, fleet, bases, routes, history and why is the Q400 being chosen over regional jets. A few technical questions to do with icing, the advantages of turboprops over jets and vice versa. Nothing to catch you out. If you struggle they will help you get through the qn’s rather than sit there and let you sweat. Make sure you research the Q400 thoroughly"

Is this similar to what you experienced ?
