Fresh out of uni..... and....

I hate to post a question which probably won't get many replies since it's so open-ended, but here goes:

I'm fresh out of university (graduated in Canada in Mgmt with year abroad at UMIST, with EU citizenship), and have no idea which road to take now. I'd always wanted to fly, and made the final stage of BA's CEP twice. In the meantime, I built up flying hours (not more than 20), but can't continue 'cause I'm paying back my student loans.

While trying to decide what to do after uni, I pretty much came to the conclusion that I'd like to fly. In order to do so, I'd have to get a good job, make some $$$$. At the same time, for personal reasons, I'm also looking at moving to the UK ASAP. So I applied to some banks, got a few free flight across the pond for interviews, but ended up with no offers.

In the meantime, I started working at YYZ in Customer Services for a ground handler, and I now realise that if I can't fly, I'd love to be working in an airport (but making more than the measly $9/hour i currently make).

All in all, I guess my question is whether anyone knows a way to get into the aviation industry in a management post in the UK or the Continent (BA use to have a graduate recruitment programme), so I can be where I love, while saving $$ to do what I love.

Any replies, either on this post, or through email, would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Similar situation to yourself. Dunno when BA etc. will have their grad recruitment programme up & running again, but in the meantime there were only 2 options available to me (as I refuse to work in a non-aviation related job): airport job or cabin crew.

Since the only airport jobs available to grads pay pretty meagre wages, I had a look at what sort of money CC were making. Answer = not much more!! (no surprise really...)

On the other hand, I found that LCCs actually pay CC relatively well. For example, at Ryanair you can expect to take home 700 pounds basic pay/month plus another 700 pounds in sector pay.

Maybe CC isn't for you (not everyone's cuppa, I can understand that), but as far as I'm concerned, it would pay the bills better than an airport job, plus lots of jumpseat rides (at least with FR, not sure what other airlines' policies on this are). Basically, it's something to do whilst you wait for the damned industry to pick up.

Anyway, that's my take on things.

p.s. the girls @ Ryanair are gorgeous!

Have you checked out many of the uk airline websites yet? A lot of them will advertise their jobs online. Take a look at this website and it will give you a list of the UK airlines. Take a look at their websites and get in touch with them. I cant really offer you any more help than that. I've seen some decent jobs come up on some of the airline website. Such as ops staff and ops manager. Both didnt require previous experience but the pay was ok and it would be a great thing to do while saving cash to get into flying more.

Goodluck.

I can't say how much I appreciate the replies - really was a confidence booster knowing that others are, or have been, where I am.

I tried a few websites, and so far applied to two posts, both in the UK, both for graduates.

Again, mille grazie tutti!
