For those who've done it...

How are the questions laid out?
Are the numerical maths tests multiple choice?
are they set out like....

Q1) divide 456712 by 2879

or like...

Q1) 456712 / 2879 =

1) 1690.6745
2) 1526.78
3) 1586.4925
4) 146.873
5) 1773.8674

and yes, the answer is 3) 1586.4925

help would be nice my fellow wannabes.

Yoda,

I seem to remember the questions being not quite so hard as your example there, more like :-

divide 65333 by 14 or so. You then use the computer keypad to type in your answer. Its not multi-choice I'm afraid! There was only one or two like that and that is one of the hardest types of question there are. The rest were scenario type questions (see my previous posts) or additions / subtractions / 123 x 45 etc etc.

Has anyone got through to NZ then? Most of the people I spoke to at CTC were on PPrune in one guise or another, yet not one (that I've noticed) has said they've got through. Odd.....

Thumbs up Welcome to NZ...

Hey Guy's, hope you're enjoying NZ! Make sure you make one of your x/c's to Motueka. It'll be good to meet some more PPRuNer's.
Might see you up Ardmore way in a crusty old 172 one of these day's!

People,

Any ideas how long it takes to get a reply from the initial application and if they are still putting people through the selection? Have they stopped because they've got enough applicants? Its been a couple of weeks now since I applied and i've not heard a thing.

Cheers
AF

Talking

i just got the email from mary inviting me to stage two :-) got to start raiding the library for mental arithmetic books now it seems!!! anyobody else due down there on the 20th feb?

Autofly: from your initial application, do you mean the online forms, or the faxed hand-written forms? I got a link to the fax forms quite quickly, but it took a few weeks for the results of that to get back to me (today!) as you've probably gathered from the thread, they are very very busy at the moment, but from my experience so far they will get back to you when they can (Even on queries regarding the forms that i had) so dont worry

CTC Stage 3

Good evening,
Being a newbe on this site, I am looking for some information on the above - CTC. I have read with enthusiasm the entire thread on the selection process. There are many descriptions of Stage 2 andwhat it involves, however, only one real description of Stage 3. Could anyone enlighten me more as to what is involved in Stage 3 as well as Stage 4? I amssuming that they have to assume that you have never flown in a Jet Simulator before, so what kind of things do they make you tackle?

I am really looking for as much on Stage 3 as possible, the interview and group excercises.

Any help would be great.

Regards,

625PA

I'm there on the 20th for stage 2. Sent my application form in last week and got a call from Mary the day they received it. Can only assume that the 'earliest start date' you specify is the difference between a prompt and not so prompt reply.

I think they well may be PPRuNers.
Got a bit of a surprise when I saw the photo! I had met three of them at the Britannia Cadet Scheme, 1 at the apptitude tests and the other two were in my group assessment!
All seemed nice guys! Doesnt really shed any light on what Ctc are looking for because Im nearly sure one of them didnt have a degree but he did work in ATC.
Well the best of luck to them!

Just a quick post to congratulate Tony and Andy on making it all the way - I've just seen the photo. Two great, modest people and it's a relief to see such nice guys getting through.

Shame I never got to see you again after stage two but have a ball!

Yeah, I was pleased to see several people I know or met - they are pprune lurkers with various backgrounds, but with a shared general soundness of personality/character

I received stage 2 feedback earlier; the email breaks down your overall commercial pilot aptitude into three distinct aptitudes -- aircraft handling, cognitive, and theory -- and indicates whether the testing predicted you have a low, normal, increased or high risk of needing extra training or indeed failing. Based on my feeling of how the testing day went (terribly on all tests), I found the assessment quite surprising (mostly very good!) On reflection, the weak area it highlights is spot on (if a little harsh!), so these tests obviously have some insightful accuracy afterall. Very interesting. Though, they are choosing not to comment on the subjective aspects of the selection.

Hi Carb, so what do you think the requirements were for passing stg2? I got 2 increased risks and a low risk for theory (but i stubbenly insist i had a bad day! ) Do you think you have to get low risk in all sections or just no "increased risk" results?

I seem to remember them saying they're not looking for excellence, just no areas where you may have a problem (i.e. cost them money for extra training!)

MrSurrey

(p.s. if you were there on the Sunday before Christmas send me a PM, it'll be interesting to put faces to names!)

I had one 'increased', for aircraft flying (bad day or not, no excuse for crashing the skiier into the sides too many times!! but on the other game I kept wiggling the joystick in the wrong direction as my mind was confusing the cross-hair thingy with a turn-coordinator, which looks the same but works in reverse, so maybe I'm not actually quite so bad)... and two 'low' ratings. Overall that gave a 'normal' rating, but having some 'increased' risk is obviously and understandably unnacceptable!

Given enough choice I expect they'd just want the 'low' overall risk people. Then again quite a few folk (half?) did progress to stage 3 so maybe any combination of low or normal is sufficient.

Since they're not revealing the threshold in the feedback, it's reasonable to assume there isn't one. There's also the subjective element of stage 2 (group discussion) - presumably they don't favour people who aggressively take the chair, or never say a word, or blurt out a load of nonsense - so I'd guess that element is weighted in to determine whether you can progress with 'normal' risk ratings or need to score 'low'.

Given my feedback, I'd advise people not to worry too much about the maths and reasoning tests, I didn't even complete them but still scored highly, but, you might want to concentrate very hard on the coordination tests! Keep those needles aligned / avoid the obstacles if it kills you, and spend plenty time on the practice screens first!

Carb

When you say that the aptitude is broken up into three sections, how do they test theory in the aptitude tests?

ps well done to those fellows who have passed. They don't look much like pilots though do they. Well done to them

What do you mean, "don't look much like pilots"?!

They don't test theory - they just test your aptitude to learn the theory. I believe several of the tests contribute to assessing that.

Thanks and Good Luck

Just wanted to thank everyone (esp. carb, wanabee1000) for info on stage 2 & 3 and how to get to the CTC site - made what could have been a very stressful time a whole lot more palatable.

Didn't make it through to stage 4 but wish the 3 who did all the best for their future careers as easy pilots, especially Bill Clark who is not only a genuinely good guy but genuinely deserved to go through. All the best mate.

I'm also going to be there on 20th Feb. Are you guys travelling down the night before?

How much prep are you doing for this? Have tried to brush up on the somewhat rusty maths skills.

Look forward to meeting some fellow ppruners!

Yep, I'm travelling from Liverpool the night before and staying at a Travel Inn a few miles down the road.

Will do some prep this weekend i.e. go through an aptitude tests book to get my brain in gear. Don't think there is much prep you can do for the computer based tests from what I've heard.

See you there.
