GAPAN Jn Somers Award

I know I am slightly premature with this post but does anyone have any useful information about this award? I have searched other posts and found that the person who won it last year was called pro spin but they were only signed on as a guest so I have no way of contacting them. If anyone knows how I could do this then it would be very useful!

Does anyone know whether GAPAN discriminate against their previous PPL scholarship winners, sounds silly but is it a case of, we've already helped them so lets give someone else a try?

Cheers in advance for any help!

Hi nell

Sorry I can't answer your enquiry direct.

Your own school or club maybe able to do this for you as a geberal enquiry if you didn't want your name mentioned, but it maybe worth just contacting GAPAN and have a chat with them yourself.

The lady to contact is Brenda Thomas and she is the Scholarship Secretary 020 74044032. In my experience she is very charming and very helpful. It won't hurt and at least you'll have your answer straight from the appropriate person.

I hope this helps and good luck.

Cheers D "n" H, you're right, the only way is to ask really! I am just surprised that there haven't been more posts about the topic over the past few years, would have thought plenty of people would have been interested in applying. Oh well, better chances for me!

GAPAN Somers Scholarship

I see this is up again. Anyone applying? Is it worth doing so?

Also in a bit more detail, what's involved?

Free ATPL? You really wanna know if its worth applying?!
I dont think (correct me if im wrong) you even have to pay back on completion of your training, unlike airline sponsorships.

gphillips134, sorry to hear that. I've not heard back myselft yet. Perhaps you could give a little more info on your background, though I don't really have any idea what their criteria is? Having that many hours may have been an issue with the training school, which I understand is BAe.

Is there anyone out there who has won the scholarship in the past? If so, they may have some more info on the selection criteria?

It would be intersesting to here who got through to the next round.
As i said before i had 155 total hours currently doing my ATPL exams therefore that would be finished by the time i start, so im thinking that they would at least call me in for an interview as i would cost them less money because the only training that i required was the commercial training and the multi engine instrument training.
Also have a Beng Honours in Aerospace Technology and a HND in Aerospace systems.
I suppose it just goes to show its not what you know its who you know.

I thought the aim of the scholarship was to 'assist the successful individual, who might not otherwise have the necessary resources to achieve their license'?

Perhaps by embarking on your ATPL exams you show you are able to self fund....?

gphillips134,

Because they put you through an integrated course then it's probably to your disadvantage if you've progressed too far. It may be different if it were modular. I also believe it has a lot to do with the school and whether or not they're prepared to take someone that's progressed as far as you have? All the best anyway with your studies.

catherine,

The person that one it last year is a member of pprune going by the name of 'Pro Spin'.

Good luck

Was it this year's competition you have already heard from or last? I only ask because the closing date was only 1 week ago and they have been really quick off the mark is they have contacted you already.

I am still waiting for my letter. I didn't reach the second round last year, so am hoping to do better this time.

Good luck to everybody and keep us all updated on your progress.

GAPAN

Understand that GAPAN and various 'other' organnisations are now to be investigated by the EU on the grounds of the high level of discrimination and biase they apply to there Sponsorships. Appparently nobody can afford to viably acquire an ATPL today in europe so this is a mis-representation.

You cannot say must be black, white, male or female and so you can't say must be 18 or 20 and wearing nappies! So long as your old enough to provide the return of service which sponsorship contracts are obliged to have then you should be allowed to apply and as only the EU can do, should have a proportionality of all backgrounds in those who are successfull!

I think what the EU are now saying is, be reasonable, don't discriminate or suffer!

GAPAN JNSomers Stage Two

I have been invited down to City University for the Morrisby tests. I've done the RAF's aptitude tests (the whole 2 hour slog!!) twice for the 6th form/flying scholarship scheme and passed them both times. Anyone know if they're similar because I believe the Morrisby's are Psychometric as opposed to aptitude tests??
(Edited to include the correct location - was getting too nostalgic!)

GAPAN Stage Two

I got invited to stage 2 (Morrisbys) on 11th Sept. PPL/IMC/MEP night 185hours. Exactly two years before this date BA booted me off their Cadet Pilot scheme because of the atrocities of 2001. Although in perspective my own piece of bad luck was insignificant, I still hope this can be a chance to go full circle from despair to delight. O well I'll keep trying anyway if it doesn't happen. Anyone else going??
