GAPAN Scholarships (J N Somers & others) 2003 & Earlier

Anyone know who got it in the end?

Well done to whoever it was, hope you have a good time at Jerez.

Pro Spin 11th Jan 2001 18:56

I did!..

I found out a few weeks ago; firstly I thought it was a wind-up, but now that it has sunk in, I'm on cloud nine!

I've handed my notice in at work and I'm off on the 19th February!

Thanks for the kind regards and I hope things work out for you soon (if they haven't already!)

Thanks to PPRuNe and the wannabies for excellent advice and encouragement.

Good Hunting to you all.

Pro Spin. :)

Congratulations, Pro Spin! Enjoy yourself!

jlms 11th Jan 2001 19:57

Could anyone explain something about this sponsorship?

Thanks guys.

Pro Spin 11th Jan 2001 21:18

jlms,

The "J.N Somers Scholarship" pays all the fees associated with gaining a Frozen ATPL at BAe's Flight training centre in Jerez, Spain (which also includes accomodation and food).

GAPAN give out one per year (they've given two so far) and selection begins around September/October. GAPAN also award other scholarships, such as PPL and Instructor Rating Scholarships.

I feel very privileged to have been awarded this scholarship, and if any Wannabes want info on selection, ready for next years award, don't hesitate to ask!

Pro Spin.

ProSpin-first of all, congratulations. I applied to GAPAN and didn't even get to the aptitude test stage. I was wondering how much flying time you've got, and what your experience is, in order that I may be a little better prepared next year. Thanks, and well done once again...BAcrew

funkster 15th Jan 2001 21:10

yes I would also like to know more info on this scholarship. What exactly were the different stages of the process? Why do you think you were successful? Please share..!

Perfect PFL 16th Jan 2001 13:07

Pro Spin, any chance of emailing me so I know who you are? Did I give you a lift back to the Train station after?

Well done on getting in anyway!

Hopefully I'll get in somewhere soon. http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif

Hot&Heavy 16th Jan 2001 17:32

I have found information on GAPAN's scholarship in the past on their website at:

www.gapan.org/somers/Somers.html

You may want to try that for info and application criteria.

Cheers, H&H

Perfect PFL,

Yes you did give me a lift to the station! I'll email you soon.

There really was nothing between the four guys at the final stage; its a shame that they weren't giving out four scholarships!

Funkster - you ask why you think I was successful. Well, as I said above, it could have easily gone to any of the four guys at the final interview. I guess the interview went well for me on the day. However, I strongly believe that the GAPAN application form carries a lot of weight in getting to the interview stage; if your form sticks out from the many they recieve, you are already increasing your chances to about 1 in 25 (25 make it to the second round - morrisby test). It's then down to your individual aptitude to get you to the final interview stage.

Good luck to you all,

Pro Spin

P.S: does anyone know the chap who won last year's J.N. Somers scholarship?

Perfect PFL 17th Jan 2001 16:49

Nice one Pro Spin, well done on getting it.
Do send me an email, speak to you then.

Air Canada 20th Jan 2001 01:36

Pro Spin,

email me your address and i'll get him to email you.

See you soon

Well done Pro Spin - has it sunk in yet? I was lucky enough to be awarded a GAPAN PPL Scholarship - as a progression I intend to apply for the next J N Somers scholarship - I would be very grateful for any useful information you have - can you send me your email address ?

All the best and ENJOY!

Need For Speed 22nd Jan 2001 22:24

GAPAN PPL Awards

Hi just wondering what the conditions there are for applying for an award from GAPAN for a PPL licence, and also when they may be available, any info would be useful.
Cheers.

If I was you I would write to GAPAN and ask about the PPL sponsorships. They are very helpful, and it's the best way to find out the correct information.

GAPAN launches 2001/2002 Flying Scholarships

I have just put the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators new Flying Scholarship details and application forms on our website at http://www.gapan.org

If you want a PPL or Flight Instructor Rating the deadline is 6 April 2001 for applications. The J N Somers Award is for a frozen ATPL and entries have to be in by 1 Aug 2001 for a course in February 2002.

No strings attached and the winners get invited to a very good dinner at the Guildhall as well!

Far Flung 26th Jan 2001 17:08

I have just had a look at their website. I believe that you require a CPL before you can start a FI(R) course. However I can't find anything on the website saying whether you require a CPL to apply for the Scholorship.

Mach 1 26th Jan 2001 20:38

I applied unsuccessfully last year, but seem to remember an upper age limit of 21 for the PPL scholarship. I can't see anything about it on the GAPAN site or form this year - I wonder if I am merely imagining it from last year, or whether a decision has been made to abandon such a requirement?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thats a load of rubbish about the maximum age limit of an award for a PPL award being 21.I personally know of a girl of '24' who was awarded one.
