Maintaining IR Currency (for Recruitment)

With all this talk of 2, 3, 4 years to getting a job from qualifying, how are people maintaining their IR skills which must go a little rusty and therefore progressively harder to get a job? Should I budget for 5 or so hours in the sim per year (I appreciate every other year you need to revalidate in the a/c)?

I would look on the air cadets website and locate your nearest VGS SQN. Become a CGI and you can get a TMG rating in your blue book. This will revalidate your SEP rating. All logable hours for when the time comes to enter your totals and send the last page of the logbook in. Ok its VFR flying, but keeping those stick skills up and having the tax payer foot the bill, even for your petrol to the SQN, better than forking out for it. I would add to this flying with the occasional trip 'under the hood' at own expense.

I applied to my local Air Cadets just last month, and was told in no uncertain terms that they would not be taking on any VGS pilots externally as they have a plentiful supply already enrolled in other areas of the ATC and awaiting positions.

no need to maintain this IR rating. you will redo the IR with the T/Rating.
you must have IR current before the TR test, afters and before this, you don't have to maintain the ME IR current specially when airlines ask now for 500h jet on type just to have the privileges to send your CV.Keep your money!

hope this make sense!

Everyone is different but I have revalidated twice now. Once in the sim and once in the aircraft. I had one refresher sim then the test and pulled it off.

If I don't get a job this year I'm planning on doing a solo in the sim once or twice during the year and also once a month fly some plates on flight sim. Not the ideal but keeps the mind ticking over....

Roll on my first airline job!........

I have done nearly the same as "Vone Rotate"

2 renewals, so far. I did them both in the aircraft, so I can have both my MEP & my SPL-ME-IR rating current. I fly once a month, to keep current in the flying world. VFR. I do 20-25 hours a year.

Roll on my first airline job too!........

Do you guys think is better to revalidate only the ir-mep with a sim to save money or also the do the MEP in the airplane?

Unless you intend to fly multi-engined PISTON a/c, there is no need to re-validate the MEP on your first renewal in the sim - or even at all.

Only having the multi-IR counts if you are aiming for a majority of paid flying jobs.

Most of the MEP operators wouldn't touch you anyway with +/-250 hours as most of them operate single pilot IR, and you can't do that with IIRC less then 800 hours.

However on the 2nd renewal which is in the a/c, then you might as well renew it as your doing it in the a/c anyway so there is no massive extra costs aside from a few mins extra flight time to cover the specific MEP work.

My MEIR is going to expire in May this year which mark 2 years of unemployment from completing my training.

I was also debating the question at first.

My position:
I'm currently working in a supermarket and any other work I can get paying for living costs etc and now having to fork out probably the best part of £2,000 (if im lucky) to keep the ratings I have not used outside of training for them.

Would I revalidate my licence? Yes - Who wouldn't?

I have come this far to get to where we I am to be in the fortunate position to hold a fATPL and if I missed the opportunity to start my career flying even a small twin piston at this point, I would be gutted for not revalidating my MEIR.

The question should be; can we afford NOT to renew/revalidate the licence???

Just hope I am not that rusty from last year!!

Keep flying, the job market is improving...

Why are you restricting yourself to airlines?? There are plenty of charter/private/biz operators about too, you might miss a trick if you are blinkered into only considering airlines.
