1000 hours jet; what next?
Hi All,
My current contract is shortly about to finish- I have 1000 hours on the B737 and 1200 TT. As much as I am grateful for the hours I have obtained with my current employer, the working conditions I have had to put up with are beggars belief, so I am looking for a new airline. Any pointers? I am pretty easy going where and what I fly, just a change of scene and an ok salary is all I ask.

Honestly dont do anything unless you have an offer written in stone...
As much as your current employer's t&c's seem like total pants, there's a multitude of jet drivers unemployed and looking for work, and a fair few with >>1000hr jet.
The market is a dry as a nuns m****e and the best place now is any place with a job - especially a jet job.
Stay put and wait for the recovery...although to quote John Cleese in Fawlty Towers, we may be waiting "about as long as Hadrian"

Actually, you meet the minimums for qatar airways FO position. You also meet the minimums for korean airlines if you hold an NG type rating.
And surprisingly, both are desperate for pilots.
Oh,and forgot to mention Air hong kong,batavia air.... and and...
There are jobs out there, just gotta look for them.

I believe Qatar are slowing down there recruitment, you need a degree for Korean as an F/O. Good luck with a reply from Air Hong Kong.
Haven't heard anything about Batavia so will look a little deeper

If you fancy doing an FI rating and flying for £15 an hour you can fly a 152 with full tanks out of short grass strip at MTOW on a hot humid day. Due to the high volume of applicants only those suitable will get a response!

Therein lies the problem.
Airlines offering contracts to 200 hour pilots are doing it because it is cheap and is the next best thing to doing away with the right hand seat altogether. Nothing happens at 1000 hours that suddenly makes you any more attractive to an airline seeking to minimize their cost base. Those ever diminishing airlines that still offer a career path that rewards experience in this seat, are struggling to compete with those that don't.
Tell them that you will fly for their idea of an "OK salary," rather than your idea. Tell them you will fly for nothing. Tell them you will pay them to fly with them. That is really the only way you will be competing with the next batch of 200 hour cadets willing and able to keep that seat warm.
Failing that, move quickly and find one of the shrinking number of airlines that still value and can afford experience. However, bear in mind that you will then be competing with those people with 2,3,4, 5000 hours or more experience, not to mention the air force leavers. With so much competition for jobs, the salary is more likely to be "K.O ed" rather than "O.K." As for the change of scenery, I have flown all over the planet, and in air transport ops, the only thing that usually changes is the name signboard over the the airport terminal.

1000 hours on a specific type should put you within throwing distance of a contract job with one of the agencies. However, 1200 total time is not much, and considering that the majority of your 1200 hours is done via the autopilot, the meat on the bones perhaps isn`t as tender as one would assume?
How to land a job? Hmmmm have you made any contacts at all during your contract? Can you use them to point yourself in any direction? No chance of asking the company you flew for for a job? Any TP operators who are hiring?

And here is a perfect example of someone who has paid to fly, and at the end of the day is still back at square one, but out of pocket! 1200tt with 1000 on the 737 screams "i've prostituted myself".

I've flown for 4 years, grafting for a Swedish regional airline. Come September, the virtual airline that my company has held a contract with have chosen to switch operator. They'll be flying the same planes on the same routes for the same ticketing company.
Naturally this gave rise to a huge demand for pilots. Everybody from our company went on interviews. Only the captains managed to seccure a job, with a 1000 EUR relative paycut at that. All but 2 FO's were left behind. Why you ask? The new company offers its salary based on experience and having experienced first officers is nothing but expensive.
All new first officers were happy to accept paying for their type rating on a dinosaur turbo prop to receive minimum wage. They're smiling now. I'll be smiling later...
This is applicable to the whole industry. Unless you get the chance to move leftward up front, you're not worth anything. Hours do not count for anything except years you've accepted prostitution. When it comes to getting a job, they're nothing more than a ball and chain unless you've established yourself as a commander.
My advice? Burn you loggbook and start over again.

Why is there not a emoticon (sp) for laughing uncontrolably? The first post makes me want to do it! 1200hrs, 1000 on jet! Do not complain here, or any where for that matter, if you cant find a job. You sold your self down the river, you deal with it. HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA at you.
