Just got that First Job? Post Here!

Hi, in the light of a lot of negative and quite frankly meaningless discussion that seems to be hanging around on this forum I thought I might start this thread, which might actually be of some use to us wannabes.

Basically, if you manage to secure your first job with an airline, after the date of this post (21/08/07) then why not post here and tell us about it?

This info will give other wannabes either encouragement if there are lots of posts, or perhaps some realism if posts are few. Either way it will be useful information. It could be argued that gaguing the job market by the number and types of posts that appear may not be entirely accurate, as there are probably some pilots who do not go on pprune and also that ppruners who got jobs might not post. I know for a fact however that by far the majority of wannabes I know read this forum and I do think that this thread might be of some use and provide valuable, up to date information for the benefit of wannabes.

If you do get an airline job after the start of this thread, please give the following:
  • airline
  • where u will be based
  • type of aircraft
  • a summary of your experience immediately before u got offered the interview, eg breakdown of hours, any type ratings?, previous aviation experience, eg instructing.
  • do you have to pay for ur TR?
  • How did u get the interview in the first place, eg through sending CV, application form, knowing someone who helped you out, recommendation from FTO, reply to advert, etc.
  • integrated or modular training?
  • your age
  • anything else u can think of.
With any luck this thread could turn into a kind of "appointments notice board", as featured in other walks of life. Perhaps the mods might see fit to make it a sicky?
Please don't make this thread descend into the usual circular and quite frankly tedious discussions of the jobs market in general, there are other threads for that.

Right, lets see what happens then, I hope to god that I will be adding my name below in the not too distant future.

Not a bad idea modern monkey. Maybe the mods could make it a sticky and remove any negative posts that may crop up. It would be good to see what routes people took to get to that ever elusive first job. Hopefully it will act as encouragment to us all.

Fame at last...

Well here goes then

Ryanair
All over at the moment (during line training), then probably DUB and hopefully STN (desired base)
737-800
400 TT (wow!) just over 100 hours instruction (part time)
Of course
Apply through CAE website
Modular
33 (just!)
First and only airline interview

My advice to others - tear the arm off the person that offers you your first aviation job - you can afford to be choosy when you have a useful type rating and 500-1000 hours on type!

Determination and perseverence are key! and of course be nice (or at least polite) to your fellow professionals...it's a small world is aviation!

Good luck to all!

I second that, this thread is a good idea.

I got my first job back in April and am lucky enough to have doubled my total time and got 210 jet hours, in just under 3months

For your first job, as another poster put it, tear their arms off
Move where you have to move, I´m living 1000 miles away from home, sure I miss my fiancee, family and friends, sure I miss my pet dog, my car etc but with each flight hour, I am closer to getting back home (I hope).

Good luck

The story is the same for most F/O´s here, some have left their kids and wives behind (I´m sure they miss their kids ) etc but we are all in the same boat and are here because we want to fly.

There is nothing that beats the feeling of your first line training flight

Keep your mind open and keep the applications going.

Got my Job a bit earlier than your post but anyway:
airline
Eurowings Luftverkehrs AG
where u will be based
DUS
type of aircraft
CRJ-200 and maybe -700 in the future
a summary of your experience immediately before u got offered the interview, eg breakdown of hours, any type ratings?, previous aviation experience, eg instructing.
I had PPL/ME-IR and the CPL almost completed. Worked as a ramp agent for almost 2 years.
do you have to pay for ur TR?
not a cent
How did u get the interview in the first place, eg through sending CV, application form, knowing someone who helped you out, recommendation from FTO, reply to advert, etc.
I was extremly lucky. I saw a post on a german pilots bulletin board that EW was actively seeking pilots so i gave them a call. Even though they weren't too happy about my "experience" they gave me an invitation at the phone for their assessment center because i had already passed the so-called "DLR-Test" (psychometric and aptitude testing for Lufthansa and the regional partners) and EW lacked enough applications with this requirement. Well i passed the AC, passed my CPL checkride the next day and passed the Sim Check on the 737 two weeks later. Got the contract even before my MCC . Now a month later still trying to get the smile out of my face
integrated or modular training?
modular. Took me three hard years from start to finish besides university and work.
your age
26

Again slightly earlier than post sugested, but started A320 job at LHR with UK major in June, TR paid for by said airline, now in line training, already have 60 hours jet time and absolutely loving it! Modular all the way. In full time employment whilst trained, only finished last year. Now bonded for 3 years. Chance of going onto the A330 very soon (hopefully). Don't believe the bollocks people talk about where you have to train, and how to do it etc etc.

All 4 people on my type rating course were modular and had full time jobs in other areas whilst training prior to starting. All were over 30, some closer to 40 and all had low hours! Says something doesn't it.

Good luck y'all!

Cheers SinBin, as you know I fit into this bracket, over 30 and modular, good to know that the recruiters take the people who they know will fit in within the airline, and not just because they paid more money for training and went to a certain school..

Every few months or so one of these threads pops up. I remember when I was training I thought they were just the best thing ever. I would read in awe of guys getting into the RHS of a jet with 250 hours and go wow.

Having got that first jet job now with 300 or so hours and hopefully a job for life unless my employer sees fit to screw me over the only thing I can see that these threads serve to do is to give those of us "lucky buggers" a big head. The reality is that just about everyone of us probably would have gone about getting our jobs through a variety of ways. The moral of the story is that none of this is new stuff and it has been discussed ad nauseum.

If you take the time to do a PROPER search here on pprune then you will see that it usually involves networking, being in the right place at the right time, possibly going to a decent school and most of all luck and being in the right place at the right time. At the end of the day though you will still need to pass the sim, pass interviews, pass pyscho tests and put together a CV that is coherent and doesn't suffer from spelling mistakes. Having done all of that it still remains one big lottery.

Here is a reality check for wannabes. How much time have you spent researching your target market? Have you been on any interview preparation courses? Did you get your CV professionally prepared/reviewed by peers/your CFI etc? Have you attended any of the pprune bashes? What about flyer exhibitions? BALPA conferences? How do you know you are cut out for the job? Do you actually have the people skills to be able to shake someone's hand, hold a conversation and come across as someone they want to employ when your CV hits their inbox the next day?

I would say that the average wannabe spends an absolute fortune on training, goes to the school that promises them the world and delivers least, then spends about 2 weeks after getting the blue book sending out online applications and CV's in the post before depression sets in. Then they hit on the idea that a google search might give them a list of airlines and hey presto 500 CV's are mailed out. Just what that airline in Lithuania really wants is a CV from a pilot residing in Surrey or maybe not. Perhaps you could start from the end game and work backwards. Just like those guys that have posted above and worked on the ramp (the right one), gotten to network with proper pilots in flying clubs and gotten that all important introduction/recommendation to an airline.

Here is the biggest tip ever. No one I know has gotten a job by sitting on pprune all day Well maybe those guys that got into Astreus a few years ago but I am sure they did some work outside of pprune to pass the entrance tests! Good luck to you all.

airline - rather not say
where u will be based - LHR
type of aircraft -A319, A320, A321
a summary of your experience immediately before u got offered the interview, eg breakdown of hours, any type ratings?, previous aviation experience, eg instructing. - 7+ years in engineering, modular training at BOU, 260 hours before jet job
do you have to pay for ur TR? No
How did u get the interview in the first place, eg through sending CV, application form, knowing someone who helped you out, recommendation from FTO, reply to advert, etc. - CV on spec to recruitment manager
integrated or modular training? Modular
your age over 30
anything else u can think of. no

Does that suffice?
