Work Experience

Hi all fellow PPrunes,

I was wondering if you could tell me if there are any airlines that operate into Gatwick that offer work experience for what will be a fifteen year old. My ambition is to be a pilot and if i gained work experience in an airline i'm sure i would gain a lot and also learn a lot!

I am as its says in my profile a big aviation enthusiast and any replies would be hugely welcome.

Thankyou For Your Time,

Dave 14 (at da mo!)

Thumbs up Work Experience

Well then. Donkeys years ago I got in with Finnair at Heathrow for a few weeks. Had a lot of fun and learned somethings that are still useful.

Try opening the phonebook and look for companies that you'd like to work with. Give em a call , get the station manager on line, and ask him. They can only say NO. Or look for contact Email addresses on the web. Email and see what they say.

There are quite a few companies that do this sort of thing, ATC Lasham to name one.

Good luck.

Cheerio

Work Experience

Hiya,
I did work experience with a company at Liverpool Airport. The company had me doing check-in and boarding. They do everythin from the PSA's to Dispatch. The same company may do stuff down in London too.

Great Time, and they asked me to return so ended up doing about 3 weeks work experience!

If you want more info PM me

Hiya, im 16 now, but when I was 15 I did work experience at Bristol International Airport. Worked in the tower for a day, customer services and the fire crew.

Also got the chance to stay with Servisair for the afternoon, and the ADM (airport duty manager) gave me a tour of the airport, behind the scenes with the bags etc. Very interesting.

I also hope to become an airline pilot. I applied to a couple of airlines, but they were not taking work experience students at that time.

I learnt a great deal at the airport, and would suggest it if you cannot find a place with an airline.

Good luck

I was grateful, while I was in year 11, that I was given the opportunity to do work experience at Gloucestershire Airport. The title of my role was 'General Airport Administrator' which basically meant that I sampled all aspects of life at the airport, such as Air Traffic Control and the airport fire service.

It could be very worthwhile to enquire at the smaller airports as the chances of gaining a succesful placement are probably higher.

My experience at Gloucestershire Airport has made me commit myself to a career in avation - preferably as a pilot I will have to wait until I get my degree though and then, hopefully, I can train

I must say like, i found it impossible to find any airline willing to accept me for a work placement a few years ago. i ended up having to change my plans and go else where. I totally agree that you need ( or at least it helps ) to know someone on the inside.

I wrote to every airline at Newcastle inter'n and, although i did get a reply from them all, they all refused.

Good luck though.

To all those asking about work experience - the airline that i work for does do work experiance placement's - but we are based down in Devon, the company though is very pro-active in promoting aviation and airline flying amonst people wishing to join the airline industry.
Most airport's since September 11th - now will not offer work experiance due to security reason's.
All i can suggest is you write to the airline directly (their head offices) rather than to the airport's.

Hope that this help's.

The security situation makes it very difficult these days.

When I was 16 (24 years ago) I did work-experience with Dan Air at Newcastle, and was issued an airside pass. Nowadays you have to have references and a Criminal Record Check to get one, which is a lot of trouble for a company to go through for very little benefit to them.

That said, at a bigger airport there is no reason why you couldn't gain valuable experience without having to go airside. Your school or college may be able to help when asking for work-experience attachments, or perhaps the local careers office.

Best of luck.

Gcse Work Experience

My daughter (15) is concluding her first GCSE year and will have to do a week of work experience in September. She currently attends ATC and has limited time in the Grob Tutor and motorized gliders.

She has currently been scheduled to do her work experience at a dentist, which is about as similar to her interests as the shuttle is to a bicycle.

I am looking for a company within reasonable travelling distance (for a 15 year old) from Bracknell Berks. where she would be exposed to the aviation industry.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I think the MetOffice is based somewhere in Bracknell, maybe you could try them? There website: www.metoffice.com

They issue huge amounts of weather data for pilots/airlines and I'm sure it would be better experience for your daugther than being in a dentist. Other than that I suggest looking on aviation job websites for positions in Bracknell. Your daugther obviously won't be able to apply for them but you'll be able to express interest in filling the position temporarily.

Good luck.

Well i live just down the road from you and was in that position a couple of years ago.(Now 18 and just finished A-levels) I did a lot of work into finding companies that would give me some work experience. A couple were helpful, although most just said they did not have any work experience available. Although i took up work experience with a computer company a friend of mine did some with honeywell in bracknell. He throughly enjoyed it and said he learned a lot! I'm affraid i can't give you any details as i don't have them to hand. But do definately get in contact with them, they may be able to help.

Expedite.

How about the RAF at Odiham? When I was there (only a short while ago) we often had work-experience people there. One of my colleagues used to commute from Bracknell without difficulty; it may even be possible to arrange a lift with him.

Failing that, Farnborough is full of aviation-related companies. No idea about the transport situation though.

I think the Met Office is moving to Exeter soon isn't it?

work experience

Hi, its my first post so please dont fry me!!!

I'm in year 12 now and looking for a week of work experience and naturally want to do it with an airline or possibly an airport.

Does anyone know of any companies that run a work experience scheme? I've tried a few but none seem to do it these days

Thanks for your help!

I did mine at Manchester Airport, along with another guy, and I know of people who have done it at Britannia AW and Heathrow AP.

As with all these things though, it helps to know someone.
