First can I say the same as others - good news and thanks for the work you put in. There are some of us who would like to contribute reularly but unfortunately circumstances do not allow it - except for attending bashes and succoming to Aerbabe's raffle tickets offers! I for one will make contributions in the future when the financial situation permits and I am sure there are others in a similar position.
Second, as a rotary pilot can I ask if there is any chance or plans for helping rotary wannabes? (I have no personal motive here as already have CPL and have paid my money to BGS for the JAA ATPLs).
But... on several occasions at bashes I have heard people and their spouses, including mine, ask what is done for or planned to help the weird types who have their propellers on the top.

Congrats Don, you're a star.
I know that there has been a lot of work put in by others, and congrats to them, but without your drive and determination I don't think it would have been such a success.
Onward and upward

THE PPRuNe FUND
I understand that questions are being asked about the fund as to it's current state and the intentions for it's use. That I reckon is a fair question so I will give you some answers and some expectations.
The current state of the fund stands at over £17,000.
It grows by small but welcome monthly donations made by SIX gallant wannabes, and by the sale of TSR2 prints which has raised over £3000 since June 2001, and by other small donations, and from auctions and raffles.
Money spent from the fund has been very limited but includes the Astraeus Cadet Scheme which accounted for £2300. But, the scheme produces a total monthly income from the five cadets of £500 per month over 5 years, the account has accrued interest of £100 thus far.
So what's next? Scroggs and I, and perhaps others well known to you, are initially and imminently going to discuss what we can use the money for to help the wannabes - starting in the early New Year.
We already have 5 ATPL groundschools which were very generously donated by Alex Whittingham at the Bristol Groundschool. What we need to do is finalise the selection process to fairly award them to those who demonstrate that they are completely worthy. One vital requirement is a PPL with at least 70hrs. Other needs will be motivation, dedication, determination and a reasonable academic standing.
There will be other things that we can do. Course fees, study material and tests are others. Assessment will be by interview.
OK. Since we don't really know where we can start yet I will post again as soon as myself Scroggs et al have had our first get together. I will update this post.
In the meantime rest assured that 2004 will see the Fund work for perhaps - You?
Edit: Just thought I would add that I have ordered new PPRuNe Caps, T-Shirts with logo's, V Neck sweatshirts with PPRuNe embroidered logo and Polo neck sweatshirts with embroidered PPRuNe logo. They are good quality and good prices.
They will be on sale at the GatBash and I will be ready to take orders for them after Christmas. The proceeds will be shared between the fund and the PPRuNe bandwidth.
FIRM prices to follow (when I get the invoice today).

PPRuNe Handmaiden
G'day IFR,
Thanks for that.
That clears up quite a few things.
I gather my previous order of a hat & t-shirt is still valid?
Cheers

IFR, if any help is ever needed with general / technical interviewing, or selection in the wider sense, or if the fund ever considers funding any training for wanabee Engineers, please feel free to call on me, I'd be very glad to help.

How can we be considered for us to receive a contribution?
I`m on the Aviation Technology with Pilot Studies Course at Leeds Uni, and would probably benefit with a small amount towards my flying costs.
If you could tell me how to go about it, it may be useful.

That is a fair question. I think we will be in a position to answer that soon. Just keep your eye on this thread - things are moving at last just for the wannabes.

Beags, I hope I answered that. If not I am sorry. But yes it was more than I could have hoped for.
Watch for an e-mail.
For all concerned.
I am very pleased to tell you that the Fund reached £21,500 today and with the promise of much more to come the outlook is very bright indeed.
In fact! Just watch this forum in a day or so. Some of you will like what you see.

Another update.
The scheme for BGS groundschool places and GAPAN tests has been a hard slog. Why? I have to date received just 13 entries. A very small number indeed.
However, we will shortly be looking at them to see who we think will be worthy of going forward to interview. Those selected will be told by e-mail.
The fund as of today's date is close to £23,500.

The PPRuNe Fund Successes - so far!
You will be aware that in December 2002 the PPRuNe Fund assisted 5 chosen cadets to achieve their treasured goal of getting a type rating via the Astraeus/PPRuNe cadet scheme. All of them are enjoying their life flying, and have each accrued many hours on the B737. It MUST also be said that part of the 'deal' was that they contributed a sum of money from their earnings once they became qualified. They have dilligently done that, as a thank you if you like to the fund, for assisting them.
This year, just a few short weeks ago, and again in conjunction with Astraeus, 4 more candidates were chosen to be type rated, but this time on the B757. They are currently undertaking line training and will soon be part of the Astraeus team. They had to work hard, but they are through the sim training and now about to embark on the rest of their training. They too have similarly agreed to contribute to the fund.
Also this year, the fund selected 5 students to receive a Bristol Ground School distance learning course very generously donated by Alex Whittingham. The fund paid for each of them to attend RAF Cranwell for the Gapan aptitude test, which they all passed. They now have their heads in the study material from BGS and we hope they will carry on to their fATPL’s. We wish them luck with that.
Following the groundschool allocations, we established a strong bond with GAPAN, and after discussions with Danny, who was extremely enthusiastic, I have sent a substantial donation to GAPAN towards their much sought after GAPAN PPL scholarships. Each scholarship is worth some £6000 and the requirements for selection are tough! The standard is, therefore, high and only the best get selected.
When Danny asked me to start the PPRuNe Fund in 2001 I did so because it gave me a chance to put something back into aviation. Astraeus, and in particular, Hamrah, wanted to be involved for the same reason. Gathering funds has been long and hard but I plan to continue. The pleasure in doing so is that some 15/16 people with the right determination to succeed are/have or will be benefiting from those funds. We can now say we are happy that PPRuNe has actually sent people on their way to a career - or to place their foot on the first rung of the ladder to becoming a commercial pilot.
The original purpose of the fund was to cover the whole spectrum of flying and I am very pleased to say that we have now achieved that by including those who seek a PPL. That is where most of us started after all.
The fund now needs building again and I still have a lot of merchandise, including badges. I also have TSR2 prints that were kindly donated by one of the last batch of candidates who has successfully become type rated on the B757. There seems to be some justice there somewhere.
PPRuNe and GAPAN will forge a close relationship and I believe something of mutual benefit will come from it. Of course, many of you will join its ranks I have no doubt. Then you will observe the riches of flying talent within its hallowed halls.
Finally I think I will take this opportunity to thank just a handful of people who have sent money into the fund every month since I started it. For those years it has become quite a large amount and I am deeply grateful. Thank you so much.
So ever onward and keep helping the fund as you can please.
