glasgow uni air squadron interview
hey everyone, im a student at glasgow university and i have an interview for the university air squadron on monday (september 27th)
Does anyone have any tips on how to stand out above the rest?
I am very enthusiastic about flight in all aspects, in particular military.
Recently i have been reading up on the current affairs throughout the world and doing a lot of research but there are so many peaople being interviewed i need to know if this is sufficient or if there are any other particular things i should do.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated everyone.

Right well firslty well done for gaining an interview. The first informal chat you have before te interview is also a screening out point.
The interview will last about 45 mins. There should be two people undertaking your interview.
Section 1 - Is all about you. Starts off with "whats your date of birth" questions and "so how old does that make you in years and months?". All to put you back on the ball again.
This section is all about you. Your family, your home life, you education, you in school studies, out of school interests, exam results.
This section nothing of great weight shall be said about RAF itself.
Section 2 - Is all about the military side of the interview.
It will focus on your knowledge of the RAF, equipment, weapons, squadrons, stations (overseas too). Will ask you about out the UAS fits into the wider picture of recruitment for the RAF. What aircraft will you fly - pressuming you pass the medical - if you fail this selection what will you do?
They will also probe your knowledge of current affairs. They could say "take me around the world using news headlines and briefly explain to me 6 or so topics that have occured in the last 12 months that have interested YOU".
Any questions - this is tagged on at the end, don't ask anything silly like "i know the competition is stiff so what are my chances?".
Hope this helps, and good luck. Oh and there may be current students milling around helping - my tip - don't let your guard down will you've got a place.

My advice would be Join
YORKSHIRE UNIVERSITY AIR SQUDRON!!!!!!!
as you will find out Yorkshire is the premiere UAS in the RAF.

Joining UGAS, the interview will be in the 'Ante Room' in Park Circus. It should be pretty informal and much easier than the Cranwell interview.
As above; know your aircraft and recent developments with the RAF.
Why do you want to join? They really want you to say because you want to fly- there are very few places for ground entry, so say you go weak at the knees for flying... not literally of course!
World news is a big plus. If you research news topics that noone else uses, then this will make them really happy because they have to listen to the usual drivel of students who want to splurge about the first page of the Sun to them... Perhaps about the recent problems in Japan with the helicopter crash in Okinawa. How about the AEGIS system being implemented in Asia? Check out www.japantoday.com and this will surely impress...
Dress smart- no buttons on the shirt collar... perhaps oxford blue no gawdy colours... a good grey or black pin stripe makes a difference.
Dont figit. Sit with your legs open and don't fold your arms. Don't sit down until you are told.
Don't worry and if you don't know the question, tell them you don't! They will ask and ask and ask until they find you don't know anymore.
Plus if you get in, promise not to join the 'Hooray Henry' of being assholes who get immense pleasure about other people's failings.... These are the ones who have lots of money but claim to be poor. A turly romantic idea. Just like bhudda.

I understand that if you wish to start Pilot Training on the UAS now you have to visit Cranwell for a quick Aptitude test and medical as well. (Think its been in for some time now)
Idea was to stop people getting through EFT, turning up at OASC and then failing a minor aspect of the medical - which happened a few times.
Should have been posted in Military Aircrew forum as well me thinks. (All though that's debatable)

Some additions/changes to bawbag
1- Doesnt matter about buttons on your shirt collar!
2- Dont say your only in it for the flying. They will slam you for that saying "all our pilots are officers, are you not interested in being an officer? Say you love flying, but you also love the responsibilty and all aspects of being an officer!
They select officers at cranwell, not pilots.
ps - I wouldnt worry too much about sitting with your legs open
Learn your stuff and relax.

It is a well know fact that YUAS has very few Yorkshire men in it 
Good luck with the interview I left the squadron last year and had a great two years. UGSAS is a very scottish squadron (not saying ESUAS ain't) and proud of it.

Just relax. They aren't looking for a finished product, but the 'potential'. Appear confident, but not aloof. Answer everything honestly (Integrity is everything...well within reason)
Never met a crab officer who wears a pinstripe suit (that is a tradition set aside for us army officers) but wear a nice dark lounge suit. From what i remember of my interview it was really relaxed. They just want to know if you have the potential and make sure that you arent a bel*end. Considering the socialising you will do, would you recruit someone that you wouldnt want to have a few beers with??
Chill and you will be fine...and have a great time at UGSAS. I did from what I can remember.

just relax and you should do fine.
Almost anyone can get on a UAS if they have a bit of sense.
If the muppets i've seen have managed to get as far IHT (from many UAS's - including MASUAS!!), you should walk in, as long as you don't step on anyones toes.
Just make sure you've done a sufficient work-up for when you get on the squadron, or your liver will pay the price!!

From the RAF Abingdon days.
How very strange, some say it matters about shirt collars and the like, some say it matters about how you sit. Of course these things matter. Basic pyschology that 1st 30 seconds, your apperance, your deportment and your manner = wouldn't mind drinking with him at the Xmas Ball/draw(Crab Ball) or hmmm very NCO aircrew (I've actually sat on selection boards people say it!)
Hey some interviewers will care and others won't but if you do go for a button down collar and he/she does not like them then it may shift the balance if all other things are equal.
Like many of the good men and women above have said. Learn your current affairs, know the strengths and weaknesses of the 21st century Strike Command ORBAT, understand the tri-service integrational aspects of a modern purple operation. Wear the suit, shoot the double cuffs out, get a strong handshake, don't fidget, sit up and engage with the eyes and soul.
You whether you like it or not you are not just trying to join the UAS you are actually going for one of the most important job interviews of your life. (no pressure) Approach it that way and you will reap the rewards.
