POL, don't listen to the old jokers. Read the book: Airline Pilot Interviews: How you can succed in getting hired, by Irv Jasinski.
If you apply for an US/Asian/English spoken country's airline: suit with a white/lightly blue shirt and a "normal" tie, no comics or aircraft on it! charcoal color, black shoes. If you apply for a European airline and/or where it's warmer than 30°, you may drop the west and/or the tie.

A wise man would wear a tuxedo as this would show you were the type of cat who socialises a lot and can get on with anyone. Indeed, mention you are off to a party straight after the interview in Chelsea and invite the interviewers!

I suggest you get 4 other mates together and rush into the interview room dressed as the village people. A quick rendition of In the Navy will have them convinced you are a team man.

It depends on the company. Doesn't easyJet say something like: "You don't have to wear a suit but if you feel more comfortable if you do we won't hold it against you".
I think Dani hits it on the head with the suit/shirt/tie advise (especially the bit about cartoon ties, don't do it. I'd leave the Disney socks at home as well). It is difficult to be overdressed, but easy to be underdressed. You can always take the jacket off if the suit turns out to be OTT.
Whatever you wear, make sure your shoes are up to scratch. A nice suit with hush puppies is a waste of a nice suit.
Read that Irv something book a while ago. Way too American for use in the UK. I wouldn't use his CV templates either, they look horrible. Maybe the old septics like it that way though.

I think the number of humourous replies effectively makes the point: do you really have to ask what to wear? Are you hoping to get away with not buying a suit or something? After spending X squillion quids already??

Scroggs; then only reason I asked this forum for help, was that I am affraid I might end up looking like someone going to a funeral wearing a dark blue or black suit... The general dresscode in Scandinavia is a bit more relaxed than it is in UK. Not that I don't have a suit.
And after reading this post I am quite convinced that I will go for the suit.

I've never heard of birthday suits and I'm from Scandinavia :P

In my dim and distant past i've seen a few Scandinavians in their birthday suits (if you know what i mean) so i know you have them over there as well as everywherelse.
Ps it's the suit you were born in ie naked, in case you really dont know what i mean.

This was NOT a daft question and I have to say that the replies from those that should ...and state that they are in a position to help are very ...very sad!
Good luck with the interview. A suit that fits and does not look as if it's just out of the bag. A white shirt (that fits), with the newness ironed out. A plain..ish tie, smart shoes and you are there. Dress for the job you want. Look like a pilot (without the wings!) and your half way there. Your fist 5 seconds are the most important!
