Worth of a B727 type rating today

Kindly guide on this enquiry:

Holding an ATPL with some 2.5k hours mostly turboprop and a jet rating on Emb145 but no experience yet. I wish to upgrade my experience on aircraft weight by doing a B727 type rating contingently if it comes with a job. Will this add value to my job marketability if I already have EFIS and multi crew time so as to be able to apply for non rated modern jet positions later? What would be the minimum flying hours I should consider building on the 727 to make the transition worth while to open further doors for career development? 1000 hours?

Thank you

P.S...I know it is an old jet rating! I know there are very few 727 freight jobs in the market on this type.So no need for thread bashes please.

Job + type rating is almost always better than job without type rating. It demonstrates you can pass the check rides.

OTOH, more time in 1 jet would be worth more than a little time each in 2 jets...

Experience is experience. How much of it is valid will depend on who you apply to. It would show that you can handle a more 'busy' environment.

Hey Dash! I appreciate your feedback. On the note of English I reckon you have missed the mark. I not only have ELP 6 but have taught English. We are in pprune and there are no rules governing the formality or informality of prose. May I suggest you bolster YOUR English so that you can better interpret mine?

Let's not have a thread drift here...the subject was..what is the worth of an old type rating such as the B727 today...and whether it would add value to one's marketability in terms of weight and high performance if other "glass" cockpit requirments are met. Is this clearer for you now?

4Screwaircrew 8th Jan 2015 14:15

I'm not sure that the 727 is worth the investment in time for the benefit that might arise from it, night cargo builds hours slowly and as you point out it is a small and shrinking fleet. If the option is there to build time on the Emb 145 I think that would be of more use to you in the long run, however I suspect that the 727 would be a more satisfying challenge to master.

I speak as one who has never flown an aircraft that was still in production.

Good luck.

Thank you for your empathy.

I imagine the 727 would be a more interesting challenge.Yes I would rather fly the Emb 145 or the Legacies for which am also qualified but as I have no time on the type no one seems interested despite my total time being not ab-initio level. The 727 job is imminently available should I choose and rather than be without work I would prefer to embark on it..but as I have to pay for the rating it is why am weighing the costs and benefits.I believe it would be a good place to learn to fly big jets and certainly hone my handling skills further. My main query is to see if the time I shall build on the 727 will qualify me where where aircraft weight minima are incorporated in job adverts and use my glass time on the smaller crafts to tally my totals toward the cumulative requirments of EFIS/weight categories.Alternative is to wait till Santa Claus drops from the sky to hand me a modern Jet rating...with free line training...which in my view is never going to happen in this day and age.So the 727 extinct as it is..still flies and commands respect in the industry as I see it...and so is worthy if doing the rating will guarantee me a job...even if several hundred hours whilst I continue hunting for glassier aviatur pastures! If my thinking is deluded I stand to be corrected. A 727 rating costs about $7k and would return my investment pretty much in a couple of months easily..and so

Intruder 8th Jan 2015 19:08

Your last sentence carries the most weight. You know how much a rating will cost, and you know how much you will be paid (which we do not), so the ROI math is easy. Balance that with the reliability of the company (will you REALLY be able to work for them at least that long) and your desire to take that job. If you have no other job offers, the decision should be relatively easy. If you get another offer in the mean time, you'll just have to decide whether to continue or jump to that one.

That said, I seriously question the integrity of ANY company these days who requires their pilots to pay for their own training, especially in an obsolete airplane...

stilton 16th Jan 2015 09:24

It's not right you should be asked to pay for any training.

Having said that, sometimes you have no choice to get ahead when you are trying to get experience and it sounds like a reasonable proposition if it's a reputable operator.

It may be an old Aircraft but it's a lovely one to fly and it is still valuable jet time.

moonburn 18th Jan 2015 19:33

It's almost worth it just to be one of the last to fly with a flight engineer. IMHO

Where do I sign up?

LWOP to go have fun in a plane I've always dreamt of flying!!!

I'd pay 7k to go for a fly in a fighter, 7k for a rating and fun in the 727 an investment in life!

As for work, it's been answered here, it's the chicken and egg... Need glass cockpit, but need over 50t.

Good luck and be sure to post pics if you take the 727!

BTW, Why not try some of the bizjet guys with the E145 rating?
Please don't...

The last thing we want is a pay to play numpty as arrogant as this.

M-ONGO pay to play numpty

We'll M-ONGO...that's a new one! So you think am arrogant? Judging from your pay to play numpty remarks I shall refer you to a saying commonly heard of in the wilderness..." a donkey(aka Ass) is unable to view its OWN posterior. Do watch what you post as it didn't reflect well on your own grace! Why not read the polite and useful posters before you first? And no I didn't ask to spend a night stop with a sarcastic foulmouth either.I am actually flying the Embraer...just not enough and hence my considered move.

I have had good advice to confirm my views from this thread and thank all those that have participated in good airmen penship. Keep your prose clean. You never know who you might be posting to ...he or she could very well be your future employer!

I consider this thread closed!

Trackdiamond 19th Jan 2015 09:11

Thank you pprunersThank yo

Thank you all for stopping by and sharing a moment of your considered thoughts on this thread and I appreciate the useful advice I have taken and should I gain the priviledge of flying this beautiful bird whose maiden flight was my own birthday...I shall surely post pics of it to reward those here that have enthusiasticaly requested!

Happy landings...to those that still have the priviledge of flying

M-ONGO 19th Jan 2015 10:26

The flight eng will make short work of you. Enjoy!

So, Embraer 145, eh?

http://www.pprune.org/biz-jets-ag-fl...allengers.html Not the CL604 then?

http://www.pprune.org/tech-log/52562...ml#post8109361 Surely not the A320?

My personal favourite http://www.pprune.org/aviation-histo...ml#post8001723

any BAC1-11 still flying?
Is the ROMBAC plant still producing the 1-11 or totally stopped?
Is the 1-11 still flying in Europe?Africa?
Where can I get cheap 1-11 lessors?
Where can one get access to a cheap BAC1-11 sim for amateur?Where is most BAC1-11 sim training done?

Thanks
Interesting, considering your previous views on pay to play. http://www.pprune.org/terms-endearme...ml#post7996766

MSFS perhaps?

Hakuna Matata.

M-ONGO 19th Jan 2015 11:00

Got a mate that can do you a Caravelle rating if you want?

Maybe worth looking into an HS121 rating too. They may well become popular in the freighter conversion scene too.

ehwatezedoing 19th Jan 2015 13:34

Good catch M-ONGO.

Anyway, nobody but companies should pay for ratings.
Unless as MSFS person, you will do it for the fun of it :p

M-ONGO 19th Jan 2015 14:12

Anyway, nobody but companies should pay for ratings
I couldn't agree more.

At least his pay to fly most likely stops at a few quid/bucks/shillings. MSFS add ons can't be that expensive.

I seriously hope he's not a real pilot (not that it looks like it), imagine being stuck down route with an @ss like him. Really, someone above gives him constructive criticism and he shoots him down...

TowerDog 21st Jan 2015 21:41

The 727 is a sweet aero plane, but a dinosaur.
Don't burn money on it unless you have a written contract for a secure job.
(Which you will not get)
Go glass young man....

I suggest you watch your immature posts. Yes I have paid money to play on simulators ..real simulators ranging from Trident, Tristar, and I would pay for any that I so desire to play with. Its not YOUR money..what are YOU worried about shenzi type?

No am not interested in the Caravelle ..I have it o my MSFS...AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT EITHER!
What constructive advise have yu given apart from mockery? @ass is you..as you can't view yours.
I started this thread with a polite request and all you did was to come and apply your faecal matter here.

I do have a few glass ratings thank yiou very much and for now the Emb145 rating will do fine...but should I get on the 727. Shall post you a photo..so you can eat your heart out!

Trackdiamond 12th Feb 2015 19:00
