I like a good sense of humor Roger. I think there are some misconceptions on your side of the pond about who's bleeding who dry. DHL and Dasburg renegotiated Astar's ACMI agreement last summer, just prior to the attempted buyout of ABX. If costs were a true issue, I think they would have addressed them then. (They may have, as we haven't seen the agreement. The privilege of privately held companies, don't you know.) On old a/c, they approached us from time to time about a refleet, but would offer no assistance to do so. Wouldn't you think if a company owned 49% of another, and wanted them to renew their fleet, they would offer assistance? On a funny note, DHL asked us yesterday if we could run 3 DC8's Wilmington, Dulles, Frankfurt for 3 months. Amazing. Of course we'll do it since we're about to be shut down to make some extra money. But really, no class on their part at all.

If UPS will now be doing all of the domestic flying for DHL, why keep the ground delivery network in place at all? Who thinks in the end, they will contract ALL U.S. delivery services (ground and air) to UPS in effect making this a domestic merger/acquisition without ever calling it that and dodging any anti-trust concerns?
This sucks. I am very sorry for the many excellent pilots at both DHL and Airborne who are effected by this.

Thanks Bob. It's just the way it is. I do think that if anyone believes DHL can give their entire US sort and air operations to their largest competitor and still survive, they are being very naive. UPS will clean their clock inside of 3 years globally. Count on it.

Jay,
Since all of our work (thanks to DHL) is with DHL, we have no other work to do once they make the transition to UPS. The odds that we would find any work to keep our airline alive is about zero. As far as the timeline, if things keep going like they are in ILN, I expect my ID to stop working at the gate any day now. That they have handled their plans announcement in the way they have confirms beyond all doubt that the Postmen are total idiots. What really chaps me is we gave up quite a bit of DOD charter work about 3 months ago, because DHL told us they'd need our a/c for extra runs in June. So, being good team players, we complied. Now, we have nothing to fall back on at all.

HvyDrvr you forget to point out that prior to the Postmans foolish purchase of Airborne and its subsequent move to ILN that Astar also known as DHL Airways was the SOLE provider of airlift for the DHL network in the US since its inception. (also wholly owned by DHL and its US affiliates).
Prior to the ABX deal - DHL US was breaking even and making a little bit of money - it was the Postman's desire to grow the US market the easy way that has brought about the demise we suffer through today.
For all of our brothers worldwide that are in the employ or contracted by DHL / DPWN, and there are many of you. BEWARE the next axe to fall may and will be the one over YOUR head as UPS takes over ALL worldwide DHL operations both GROUND AND AIR.
