Cabotage in Europe/US?
This could get really interesting! Imagine FedEx and UPS having free reign in Europe.

Deputy Assistant Secretary-Transportation Affairs John Byerly said offering cabotage rights to EU carriers for cargo flights is under consideration and could be in play during the next round of EU-US open skies talks. While noting that no consensus administration policy has been developed, the US's lead air services negotiator said cargo cabotage is "less threatening" and may not encounter the strong opposition from labor and Congress that passenger cabotage will. "'Cargo first' is a way of
approaching changes in our laws," he told ATWOnline this week, emphasizing that he was expressing a personal opinion and not US policy. "Whether that will take the form of direct cabotage or DHL having outright ownership of [its US subservice operator] Astar [Air Cargo] I don't know."

I would have thought Deutsche Post value the American market far too much to go rocking the boat in seeking "cabotage rights". On the other hand don't be too surprised to see them hedging their bets in using new joint venture carriers from this side of the Atlantic to provide one stop import/export options; that would certainly give them the flexibilty and diversity they are looking for.
The vogue business terminology in DHL management circles seems to be; "we seek to divest". Divesting signifies a different kind of business approach from the style UPS & Fedex use, and it's a strategy that's likely to conform well with Deutsche Post's stated outsourcing policy.
