...company representative with responsibility for assisting the smooth turnaround of the aircraft and crew, allowing crew to complete their duties (loading or preflight) without getting hassled by handling agents, hotel staff and airport authorities who all want a slice of the "action".

Usually carried due to the nature of the irregular routes, destinations and cargo carried.

I thought his only duty was to get the crew back to the aircraft in a sober state at the right time

Aaah but sometimes there's a bit of role reversal getting the flight manager back to the plane sober,
But seriously there are times when its very demanding, dealing with poor comms in out of the way places shepherding, 15 crew members around keepng tabs on them, and wearing many different hats, you try turning up at 0200L in San Salvador for crew rest and finding no-one is expecting you or the second biggest freighter in the world, then when you eventually get to the terminal three hours after landing one of the captains tells you he's left his passport on the aircraft, just when the immigration ladies has come into arrivals in her dressing gown.... thats what a flight manager has to deal with, anything you can imagine...
