Cargolux orders two new Boeing 747- 400F Freighters for delivery in 2007 and 2008
Seattle/Luxembourg, March 9, 2006 Cargolux, the Luxembourg based all-cargo airline, has placed orders at Boeing for two new 747- 400F freighters to be delivered in summer 2007 and in summer 2008 respectively. Cargolux currently operates 14 B747- 400 freighters. The introduction of a used 747- 400F freighter, scheduled to join Cargolux by the end of 2006, has been cancelled and this aircraft has been sold in the meantime. With the two new aircraft Cargolux will gap the period until the delivery of the new 747- 8F fleet starting in September 2009.
As from summer 2008 on, the Cargolux fleet will be composed of 16 aircraft of the type 747- 400F. From 2009 on, the step-by-step renewal of the fleet will start with the introduction of the new Boeing 747 8 Freighter.
In November 2005, Boeing had announced the construction launch of the new 747-8F series. Cargolux is the launch customer of this new model and has announced firm orders for 10 aircraft and purchase rights for an additional ten units of this upsized 747 F.
The 747 Freighters play an important part in our business model, says Ulrich Ogiermann, President and CEO of Cargolux. The performance level of the 747- 400 freighter within our worldwide network is a cornerstone of our results these last years. With the introduction of the 747-8F freighter by the end of 2009, Cargolux will enter a new area of increased operational efficiency, of further improved environmental performance and of an enlarged potential for better products to benefit our customers.
We will continue to pursue our moderate growth strategy in line with the growth outlook of the cargo business, meaning that we must relentlessly adapt our network to the continuously changing requirements of our customers.

Really good move, I wasn't looking forward to flying the used one (heard to much about it from those who had flown it).
NOW let's sort out the CWA and get back the good feeling in this company - we know we're going in the right direction.

Just got an email that the Ground Staff part of the CWA has been signed. It will be implemented when the Crew part is sorted.
I heard bad things about the Asiana aircraft too (ie a wreck). Also heard from someone tight with the money counters that it would cost $100m (!!!). I take that figure with a pinch of salt though.

To give you an idea of what Ratty says about a potential $100 million bill for repairs, that was roughly what Qantas paid for their little golf course excursion at BKK! All to save a hull loss from the books!

as for the planes what other choice do they have?
i mean in general not only hardware wise, it's the "expand or die" thing, i doubt the cargo market will remain in the hands of a chosen few forever , think emirates and their new upcoming fleet and others , time to come up with a cunning plan , as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning (thank you baldrick and blackadder)

Cargolux just fired a crew. The co-pilot is a Delegation member
, and the Captain is newly appointed. The impact this will have on all items related to CV is going to be unpredictable
. Please do not release too much info as this will endanger the strategy of the Unions

but this is more of a deleg thing than a purely union one

Read that the -8's will be part of a fleet renewal.
What does that really mean? To replace all the -400's, or just the 'oldest', and how many is that.
Would guess as CV tries to expand as well with the new -8's, so maybe at the end to keep most of the -400's?
