Lufthansa Cargo forms cargo airline in China

The Chinese carrier Shenzhen Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo are in future to operate a joint cargo carrier in China. Jade Cargo International begins operations after the Chinese New Year festival in 2005.

The headquarters of the new carrier is located at its major hub in the southern Chinese metropolis of Shenzhen, which already has the fourth biggest airport in the People's Republic of China. General Manager of Jade Cargo International is Dr. Rudolf Tewes.

Besides destinations within China, it will initially serve intra-Asian routings to countries such as India, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand with two Airbus A300-600 freighters. Later, in a second phase, it will extend its route network to other destinations beyond Asia.

Shenzhen Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo will be partnered by a third investor, the DEG - Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft, which is also taking out a stake in the new company. DEG is one of the largest European development finance institutions for long-term project and company financing.

Shenzhen Airlines will own 51 per cent of the joint venture, Lufthansa Cargo will have a stake of 25 per cent with the remaining 24 per cent held by DEG. It will be the first carrier with foreign participation to operate in the Chinese market.

Dong Lijia, Chairman of the Board of Directors Jade Cargo International and General Manager of Shenzhen Airlines: "The founding of Jade Cargo is a milestone in Chinese aviation industry and a further step in the internationalisation of the Chinese air cargo business. The combination of two growth-oriented carriers from China and Europe is of pioneering character. Despite tough competition, we are confident that Jade Cargo International will quickly find its feet in the market and gain market shares."

Stefan Lauer, Lufthansa Cargo Supervisory Board Chairman and a member of the Executive Board of the parent Deutsche Lufthansa AG: "After the Ameco MRO joint venture in Beijing, only recently extended for a further 25-year term, the Lufthansa Group is with the founding of Jade Cargo International clearly underlining the success of its cooperation with selected partners in China and reaffirming its lead role in the growing Chinese market."

Commenting on the strategy of the new company, Dr. Rudolf Tewes, the General Manager of Jade Cargo International, said: "Jade Cargo International's operations will be governed by rigorous cost discipline and flexibility combined with high quality. Its product portfolio will be adapted to suit the needs of the local market and customers. We will focus clearly on airport-to-airport general cargo for our target customer group - intra-Asian and globally active forwarders."

The company name "Jade Cargo International" was chosen because of the historical importance of jade in Chinese culture. Highly prized in China since about 5,000 B.C., jade was treasured more than any other material in early Chinese history. It is also known as yu, the heavenly stone, a harbinger of happiness, prosperity and prestige.
