CX Direct Entry Captain A321

As the title suggests. DECN is finally happening. 36 months of service from initial check to line required for those who are currently employed within the cathay group before their application will be processed (ie. hkexpress)

Doesn’t say 321 anywhere in the ad. I understand it is for all types depending on background and what they are flying now. They need as many CNs as they can get and there wouldn’t be enough training capacity on the Neo for that. Two have already joined on the 330 and one coming on the jumbo. Another possible to the triple.

No. At the moment only ex CX group.

Here in the US, some want to go back but refuse to apply as CX is forcing you back onto the type you left on. Some were mainly 777 for most of their CX careers and went to the 747F for a short while have to go back to an already over-crewed 747F fleet. That's potentially a loss of quite a few captains as they choose to stay here. Some of y'all will agree with that, but it's a bad business move. When enough people don't go back, CX will start non-CX DEC.

CX desperately needs experienced captains, yet still, they continue to play hardball. It's just like the Democrats, we need things changed fast and Biden replaced but still, they think they know best and are playing hardball and keeping this embarrassment on the frontline. Let's see how that works out.

They'll be even more desperate after the HK Government's edict:

‘We won’t solely rely on Cathay,’ Hong Kong’s transport chief says as airport capacity increases

SCMP, 12 Jul 2024

  • Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung says city cannot wait for Cathay recovery; other airlines lobbied to maximise traffic through airport
Hong Kong is turning to airlines other than Cathay Pacific Airways to fill capacity opened up by the airport’s third runway as the city’s flag carrier has had to delay its full recovery to the first quarter of next year. Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung has also urged Cathay Pacific to bring forward its target date for a return to full capacity.

A source said that because of Cathay’s slower than expected recovery, the Airport Authority would announce its own initiatives next week to encourage other airlines to open up more routes and increase frequencies to fill extra capacity opened up by the third runway at the end of this year.

“We won’t wait for Cathay any more and we’ll go ahead with our plans to invite other airlines to run more services to Hong Kong to cater to the third runway,” the insider said. “The carrier has been too slow in recovering its capacity.”

Didn’t they do this 18 months ago?

Patxiku 13th July 2024 18:41

How many hours are A321 crews flying per month?, What about QoL? Thanks!

Spin and spivery might work for fleet forum, but it appears the good people from the government can count. If they want 100% by middle of next year, I'd expect direct entry commands from outside the group will be required real soon. Somebody forgot to send a memo to the lassies in the people department couple of years back, highlighting the importance of an ATPL and minimum command experience requirements when they appeared to be on the war path. Good luck to all. And try to dodge the 321, just doesn't appear to be the right fit.
Direct entry employment onto bases anyone?

That's the strong rumour circulating here in LA, that some senior CX officials were seen here looking at ways to set it up. That's why guys are not applying to go back and be forced to the 747. They are holding out for 777 DEC and hopefully DEFO on a USA base.

lol didn’t the Americans all take the Company to court? Why would they set themselves up for another day in court when they only just got out of there..?

krismiler 14th July 2024 23:51

CX will have to start recruiting from third world countries and low cost airlines if they want DECs, the days when Captains from first world airlines were queuing up for the RHS on a Tristar at double their current pay are long gone.

Expect a far more diverse pilot group if this goes ahead, nothing wrong with that if everyone meets the standards. Previous experience with DECs and contract pilots makes me think that there could be interesting times ahead.

A proposal was put to senior management a few months ago that would have seen former Aus-based pilots return on some type of basing or guaranteed commuting deal to "help out". I understand the idea was flatly refused.

main_dog 15th July 2024 02:59

Covid was all their Christmases in one, allowing them to close all bases (and their pesky labour laws) and simultaneously force the remaining pilots in HK from proper -often expat- contracts onto a local policy document where crew are paid power-by-the-hour. They can even amend how much power and how much pay at any time, with a simple Friday evening email.

Can’t see them walking any of that back.

controlledrest 15th July 2024 06:53

I can't see bases ever returning. The non-contract POS18 wouldn't be legal in Aus, USA, UK, EU, NZ....

controlledrest 15th July 2024 06:55

The 'new' standards aren't hard to meet. FOs who't are rough on the tiller, can't manage a profile and can't land are released to line to work it out for themselves.

apparently there has been SOs who failed to upgrade on their originally assigned fleet that were given a second chance to retry on a supposedly "easier" fleet

Icantleavebecause 15th July 2024 13:29

Just sayin what the rumours are over here. Maybe the senior CX "officials" came here for something else. Who knows

What is an “ easier “ fleet? I assume standards should be the same.
