Winter storms in USA
It will be very interesting to see if Cathay is going to cancel any or all flights bound for the US east coast
JFK, EWR and BOS are expecting 12-18 inches of snow with winds gusting to 30kts . During a massive winter storm
I see so far there have been 6000 flights cancelled already , with EWR almost shut down tomorrow
Stay safe out there

It's not about pilots and flying. The airports simply can't keep up with the snow removal and deicing that's required to move all the flights. By contrast, HK can barely get it done in really good weather with just a tiny percentage of the aircraft movements seen in NYC alone, not to mention the rest of the NE corridor. Maybe that's because we treat every flight like it's a lunar landing. Ever heard of a visual approach in HK? Oh no, that's far too scary.

Globocnik,
Yup, pretty much so.
I fortunately (lucky squirt club) live in a country that if we were attacked from a base on the dark side of the moon, we would spin up and be capable of retaliatory strikes on that base within 24 months if properly motivated.
Is this the same with the little hovel you reside in?
On a more serious note. I believe there was a serious risk of dumping 300+ passengers at JFK without ground transportation or available hotels if the storm had taken a track to dump 24" of snow at the airport.
That being said, the large amount of flights that were cancelled were narrow body and more subject to schedule constraints of each airline. IMHO, the long haul flights should be sent provided secondary plans for lodging are secured at places like YYZ or ORD in the event the forecast weather appears.

Oh, just before the confirmation bias-driven, junk science-believing, conspiracy theory believers take over this thread and spread their "alternative facts", a reminder that this is what the relevantly educated, properly informed and data-driven scientists everywhere mean (with a worldwide scientific consensus, minus a few financially motivated, lobby-funded groups/spokespersons):
From: https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/n...e_weather.html
The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time.
Hey, but what does NASA know about the atmosphere, anyway?

The only thing I know about man made global warming is that there ain't no money in denying it!

Oh btw, it's -5F outside my hotel right now, in the middle of March, at sea level, but that's just a weather phenomenon. We should be really concerned about global warming in the last century or so, because this time it's different! Where have I heard that before? The "science" is always final, until it's not... when the next batch of "science" comes out, but THIS time they've really got it figured out. Yeah right! Let me go warm up my 6.2L truck. I've got a 10 hour 747 flight to fly. How's that for carbon emissions? You Prius driving queers!
Only 24 months Lizard ? I think a few months longer for us. We have our own warheads, however, we get the missiles from you guys. The last one we fired ( in your waters ) went awol a la Kim Jong Un ( I appreciate the efficacy of an ICBM is enhanced by not knowing where it's going, up to a point ) and we'd have to have a cup of tea before we launch it. Hovel ? Yes. It is. It's my hovel though. Ta ta.
