Early Left/Right turn out of VHHH inner runway
Hi Guys,
Maybe our HKG ATC ppruners can help me out.
Just out of curiosity, when is the earliest possible point that we are allowed to take a turn down south in VMC condition? Specifically for heavy jets operations.
Thank you.
Regards,
lion-g

See the following chart from the HK AIP:
AIP Hong Kong - ATC Surveillance Minimum Altitude Chart
I don't know if ATC have any other local rules, but according to the chart they can't let you turn south within 4nm from the departure end of either runway (07R/25L) unless you're above 4,100ft. Outside 4nm, they can't let you turn unless you're above 3,000ft. On 25L, that drops down to 1,500ft once you're outside about 6nm, assuming you keep climbing after the turn.

Keep your shirt on UNIFO.
Nobody said anything about deviating without a clearance.
You need to get out of your HK-centric way of ATC thinking.
There is nothing wrong with approving an IFR aircraft to deviate below the MVA provided they report able to maintain visual separation with the terrain and "visual" is appended to the clearance.
As for separating with other traffic once approved- no, thats still your responsibility.
Please get off your high horse. They all know its relatively busy here. There are plenty of busier and more complex places than HK.
BuzzBox has pretty well nailed it in the case of IMC.

A 380 operator asked for an early left turn after departure off 25L due weather recently, hastily adding "after clear of the terrain." The Towers response was rather entertaining but amounted to NO!

I couldn't agree more UNIFO. I thought that it displayed a rather poor judgement on the Double Decker's crew's part to even ask the question.
If there is severe weather on the initial part of that SID that you are not prepared to fly through then the only alternative is to wait it out. Trying to shave the corner of Lantau Island is DEFINITELY not a great idea or even an option.
