To EFB or not to EFB
That is the question. With more and more of the world's airlines using iPad's or some form of tablet as an EFB, how much longer will CX persist in it's inutile pursuit of an in house solution? 60 kg's of books and bags on each flight deck translates to HK$8M a year in fuel. Yup, really interested in fuel savings - this simple solution has been available for over 3 years now.

As someone who works for a none HK outfit currently going through the transition to a bespoke in house iPad solution can I say
: Be careful what you wish for..Make sure your management buy a product that is time served and has been Beta tested by some other poor s**ds in another airline and works out of the box for you guys from day one.
Do not, on any account be railroaded into struggling along with some half ased/cheap app that management want you to Beta test, because trust me if you do that you will get management messages along the lines of ..."oh, we didn't know you wanted to be able to dim the screen at night"," oh you want it to have a > 6 hour battery life?" ( no hard wired power supply for us)...."oh, so you don't want the all important charting app to disppear off into the ether, lock up, and try to find a network/update/go into sleep mode when you are crossing the FAF whilst IMC?"...and ultimately: "Despite all the above we're sure you can work though it and the paper will be going in two weeks time" (actually ours backed down and we're still using paper charts)

The Cathay knows better.
There is no system out there that can be better than anything designed by a Cathay manager, for its mundanity and lack of perfection will never satisfy the highest of aviation authority that is our great and wise management.
Consequently, Cathay must design its EFB system from the ground up to show the World how an EFB system should be.
The amount of time and money invested in the conception of such perfection is irrelevant. As is customary, the world of aviation is fretting in anguished impatience for The Creation. Its flawlessness will strike awe in the most blase of connoisseurs.
Detractors will once again experience sorrow and remorse for their misplaced and envious bile will predictably find no ground to land on.
The Creator will then reap the momentous yet deserved reward for once again bestowing the Universe with such a masterpiece.
All hail The Creator.
