UAV near-miss PEK
Rumour going around CX City is that a CX 777 had a very close near-miss with a grey UAV while on initial approach to PEK a few days ago. No real details but apparently there were 2 UAVs spotted, 1 at low altitude and another that passed within 'yards' of the cockpit windshield. Nothing from ATC. Keep your eyes open!!!!

It's interesting now with so many people flying these quad-copters with onboard video and long range radio, I think we are going to see more and more of this kind of thing. Go look these things up on youtube. Not sure of the range, but they fly at some pretty high altitudes, and it just a matter of time until someone gets the bright idea of flying them in the approach path of a major airport. One of those wouldn't do well going through your Roller, now would it.

negative it was just the cx boys unsure of the arrival
UAV = Unidentified Arrival Verification
I have seen this many a time whilst checking cx crews into PEK, total panic.
Seen the KA boys handle this much better, they seem to understand the PEK arrivals much better, briefing complete around 6 miles on the ILS
Remember lads on a line check to PEK if ATC tell you about the traffic thats on final for 36R, report in sight, never advise you have traffic in sight, otherwise ATC tell you to maintain visual separation ! Gotta love that that

Safety last
There has been at least 3 close calls between aircraft on approach and UAV's in the past 2 years at LAX that I am aware of.
There is no way to control the use or purchase of UAV's, its too late for that. However some measure of law needs to be passed across multiple jurisdictions to ensure that any idiot that does create a safety risk by using one of these things can be prosecuted, severely. The potential risk is frightening. It is only a matter of time until one of these uncontrolled vehicles infringes controlled airspace and causes a disaster.
I am still amazed that decades and decades of implementing systems to control airspace, mitigate risk, enhance aircraft safety and isolate aircraft from being physically damaged by external means can be pissed away by allowing anyone and everyone to be able to buy a drone and fly the frigging thing in the air around an airport?

Lakes2B, not sure if I understood what you meant.
Only a few months ago (Jan2013) you posted:
Since then, you claim to "have been checking CX crews into PEK"
So have you somehow rapidly risen from SFO to Check Captain, in just a few months?? If so great work!

Currently on A330 as a SFO in Asia with over 3000 hours on A330 and 1000 on A320

I've been 'checked' into PVG. Line checks into China can be easy, because if you handle the dreadful Chinese ATC OK you look real good!

Lakes,
Perhaps the CX guys and gals are not quite so adept at handling Pek arrivals as you, KA and Hong Kong Airlines, etc, because, unlike you lot that spend every day flying into that dreadful place, they are flying basically all over the world? Perhaps you would show the same lack of familiarity if you were thrown into an approach in Chicago or JFK or some other far flung place?
Just a thought.....
