Is Dragonair still hiring DEFO???

Hi all,

I noticed that Dragonair was hiring a few last year.

You can still apply on their website, but does anybody know if they are actually still hiring DEFO???

Any advice would be great!!!

Dragonair are on a hiring freeze at present. There have been a few articles in local media about them "reining in expansion" due to concerns about the Chinese economy.

Okay then...I only saw the bit about expansion being reduced. If they're hiring pilots, go for it and the best of luck to you.

Reading today's issue of The Standard, page 7:

"The airline will recruit 100 cabin crew and 40 pilots this year, and enroll 30 local young people into its cadet pilot program."

Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, a fully owned subsidiary of Cathay Pacific Airways, has reduced its recruitment and fleet expansion plans this year because of the slowdown in the mainland economy and air traffic growth.

Dragonair is now short of pilots. Both Captains and First Officers according to gossip. Our expansion plans have been wound back until we can catch up if you consider this gossip with media releases. CX will help us out by doing more of our flying.

Now, why is this so? Put simply, if we concentrated on command training and direct entry first officers would this have been a problem? Or by sticking with a cadet pilots who hoover up a higher amount of training resources, have we forever missed some of our planned expansion which CX will now take over?

Oh, and a very big congratulations to Management for fixing our command upgrade training by reversing a high failure rate. It has been fantastic to see so many of our pilots actually enjoying their upgrade and getting a lot more out of the extensive training program. If we persisted with such a high failure rate, a lot more of our expansion program would have gone the way of CX or fallen by the wayside. I don't know if the fix was a simple one or more complex, but a genuine kudos to Level 2!

Does anyone know why we persisted with recruiting so many cadet pilots when the direct entry option seems to have made so much more commercial sense, for at least the short term, to meet expansion requirements?

I'd also love to know why they favour cadets so much. I passed selection with KA last year and so far nothing. Got 4700tt with 3.5k jet time. Wish they'd hurry and call me! Don't know if anyone else in similar situation but I know they've taken on lots of cadets since I passed selection.

Some little matter of the Immigration Department regulations. In HK law, you can only employ an ex-pat if you can prove there is no HK resident who can do the job. Being already qualified is not a reason unless you need someone particularly skilled or with a certain amount of experience prior to employment.

Well then it's a bit unfair our low cost competitors get away with under-investing in local youth! Why do Jetstar and Hong Kong Airlines get away with recruiting expatriates only?

It would be commercially beneficial for KA & CX to insist on other locally based airlines in having to set up an expensive cadet training program. Perhaps this would curtail our competitors expansion too.

But that's exactly what they were looking for, hence the advert for experienced DEFOs. By definition a cadet is not suitable for the role.

Are they still offering the BYO salary crap they were 18 months ago? Or are they talking real turkey again? They won't attract experience with what they were offering.
