With all this expansion heard the other day a few guys from HK airlines jumped ship to china southern, must be worrying for both airlines in trying to find people when they are expanding so aggressively.

Just a wild guess here, but I'm thinking very few gweillos from Europe or Oz will be chomping at the bit to fly on the China Southern kangaroo route through ZGGG. Plenty of other options on more reputable airlines through more interesting hub cities. China Southern had better fill up those A380s with Chinese passengers, or they might be in trouble.

I've been shocked flying china southern and Air China domestically in China, they are always full and charging not such low cost prices. I imagine they can afford to fly some less than full aircraft internationally while they develop routes. On top of that they are fully backed by the Chinese government.

Their low business class fares might be attractive to those who are paying their own fares but want more than being jammed in like sardines in economy.
The jump in benefit from an economy seat to a lower end business class is considerable. The jump from lower end business class to higher end such as CX and SQ is quite noticeable but may not be worth the extra couple of thousand $$ to someone not on an expense account.
The backpackers will of course choose the cheapest fares and China Southern quite often offer them on the kangaroo route.
Corporate passengers and higher end economy will probably stick with the quality airlines, particularly if wanting a stop over en route.
