Well, that's a lie. Notice how they use the word 'may'. Its actually the opposite. The Chinese government is not only making expats pay tax, but they now want them to pay social security as well. This is a serious problem for companies in China that employ expats and has not been resolved. The catch 22 is that you have to be a resident of China to take advantage of the social security and the only way for a foreigner to be a resident is to have a work visa. If you are working, you can't take advantage of the social security. So you are paying money into a fund that you will never be able to access.

This is a recent issue and is part of a general trend by the Chinese government to make it harder to hire foreigners. Don't take my word for it, go ask someone who does business in China. Pilots are not exempt either, this applies to all foreign workers.

I wonder what other little lies are lurking in the contract?

At least they have a translator to tell you how much social security tax you will have to pay; if you ever have a day off awake afforded to you in order to figure out why you are not making what you thought you would

The assinine EXTRA CAAC medical examinations that make one feel like a lab rat are well published on other threads but have increased as well over the last 12 months.

The latest BS requirement in this trend at my Chinese contract job is the requirement of USA passport (only USA) holders to have a face to face interview with the Police Chief in order to renew your working/resident visa. This was required for the initial visa but never required for the annual renewals.

I guess it all goes back to the fact that contracts in China are worth about as much as toilet paper.

And if one of the parties involved is an expat, that contract is worth about as much as used toilet paper.

They could offer 400,000 USD, it is still subject to their interpretation, so basically it is like replying to junk, spam-mail.

China... Africa with none of the honesty.

Eloquently put LL, and spot on

Not sure about Air China but most others have fines for everything from taxiing too fast to lightning strikes, I even heard a rumour they are considering fines for bird strikes . So they get your net pay down one way or another.
Even the HK muppets are now demanding tax from CX guys who spend more than 60 days a year there ( based guys ) what other fcukwit country in the world would come up with this ? I don't even live in that hellhole anymore and it still 5hits me to tears

Hardly any of the arguments I have seen here could not be equally applied to a flying job in HK!

$194k a year will not pay for the lifetime of asthma meds your kids will need after living in that polluted mess.

geh065.

Here's one .

A KA or CX B Scale makes more than is being
Offered for a Air China Capt.

With more leave, better benefits, and as much as
it pains me to say 'better' air quality than Bejing

Laughed out loud. Few places in the world can make HKG air pollution look like an improvement. Bangladesh, India and the PRC of course.

I wouldn't be surprised if he came up with that masterplan because he thought this practice would get him some pocket money for his kids studying in the USA. After all, it's practice in China to decently leave an envelope with $$$ on the table when you leave an officials office (or alternatively, take him to massage and get wasted)

wow, that must get tedious pretty damn quick ... but considering the US government's military aggression towards China and the constant hypocritical bitching about currency manipulation, it's not really a big surprise is it?

I'm sure you're aware of the reception Chinese passport holders endure at American airports. And Washington's relentless sermons on free trade doctrine ... it'd be a bit weak if there weren't some token obstacles wouldn't it?

The social security plan is at this moment just a plan and like most things in China, the government changes its mind from day to day.

And just to add - China is not a ****hole. It's a fantastic place and the people are wonderful.

Wow, I guess we were all worried about nothing then. All those out there thinking of taking the job, go for it as according to AlexanderH the social security are 'just plans' and everything is ok. Move your family to China, trust us it will all be fine.

Good to know it isn't a ****hole as well and everything is 'fantastic'. I guess I won't worry about the milk powder that kills babies, the recycled cooking oil taken from the gutters, the baby girl who was run over by a truck and 18 people walked past her without helping, the father who was tortured in jail for complaining about the shoddy school that fell down on his child during an earthquake...

I've got plenty more AlexanderH, just let me know if you want anymore examples about how 'fantastic' it is in China.

What has happened to us? It seems as if we have perverted our freedom, our rights into license, into being irresponsible. Perhaps we did not realise just how apartheid has damaged us so that we seem to have lost our sense of right and wrong.

As quoted in "Desmond Tutu turns 75" at News24 (6 October 2006)
The same could be said for the Chinese people. Substitute "capitalism" for "apartheid" and you've got the cause.

Wow waY to serious

Lightening the tone...

My favorite part is

•No limitation of VMC circle to land restriction on license.
What country puts VMC limits on a pilots licence ?
