Recommended camera shops in HKG

Hi guys & girls

I have friends who will be visiting HKG later this month. They have expressed an interest in buying a digital SLR camera. Any recommendations for good shops who will not rip them off. I have already suggested Fortress as a starting point.

I second Jizz's recommendation. You can't beat Johnny (or his right hand man Alex) for all manner of AV equipment plus good, honest service.

Bought alot of gear from him over the years - he is the duck's guts.

Buy it in the US&A.

Best Buys' prices leave HKG for cold every time.

AND you get a guarantee that will be honoured.

If your friends want to buy a camera, tell them to go to Flatbush Ave in New York City. The camera shops there have the cheapest prices in the world.
If that isn't a viable option, then have them order from Amazon.com and delivered usually free of charge to a USA address. Beats Fortress hands down.
When I order from Amazon, I have all my orders delivered to my hotel to beat the delivery charge to HK. The returns policy is better than anything in HK.

Cool

Check the prices at dixons tax free shops. I personally would rather pay a bit more in the knowledge that should it go wrong I can take it back, once you leave HKG (assuming it works after you've left the shop!) you will have problems.

My advice, don't do it.

LCC,

with all respect to previous two posters, they clearly haven't used "Johnny" before. He is NOT a "Jordan Rd" shyster or a "shrink wrapped" parallel import guy. Not all HK electronics retailers are crooks!

FWIW I have bought a shed-load of high and low end gear from him, never has he or his wares disappointed me. His shop is literally lined with 'thank yous' & letters of recommendation from airline pilots around the world. He only makes slim margins from on cost price for A/V gear to pilots, and his after sales service is well and truly second to none. (Go there personally and ask him about his warranty terms.)

As for value, I have shopped for photog gear all over the world and apart from the snake oil salesmen in TST, his prices are by far the best. "Best Buy" for camera gear?! Hell, even Fortress is cheaper!! (B&H in the US are ok, but after all the "+plus+doubleplusgood" taxes get rung up, then you're screwed!).

You may do better on prices at some duty free stores, just don't expect much in the way of after-sales service.

Sorry to harp on, but Johnny doesn't deserved to be tarred with the "dodgy" brush!

PM me if you want anymore details.

+1 for Johnny and Alex. They'll price match, and the warranty terms are awesome.

One big problem with Johnnies is having to stand in line behind so many pilots, but its worth the wait.
