Not short of pilot's - nor lost opportunities!!!
Gents,
As you may be aware, your JFO Upgrade Courses will experience a delay of about 2 weeks towards the end of the Simulator Phase. For some of you this has already occurred, and for those of you starting either later this month or in April, you will see a break in training after completion of your IR simulator session.
The simple reason behind the break is that our Training Captain strength has diminished in the short term due mainly to sickness and we are, therefore, unable to offer continuity without building in a gap in training. It is envisaged that once you commence the flying phase of the course, you will have a more balanced roster with good continuity in flying and a reasonable number of breaks and/or days off, all the way through to your Aircraft Line Check.
We have broken the course at the IR point because simulator availability, along with simulator instructor utilisation, has made it close to impossible to move that phase of your course without massive disruption, also, there are four of your group who are already on, or just about to commence, the simulator phase. Breaking the course at this point also means that the Sim and Aircraft Base Training sessions will be rostered once you re-start the course, which means that you have the opportunity to "get back in the saddle," and to have all the initial flying (ie Base Training and 1st sectors) in close succession.
During the break, we will try to keep you both current and productive. We will therefore attempt to roster the ABA (emergency proc/eqpt training) and FLN days during this time, and those who were Airbus SO's will operate in the SO capacity on the A330, which will help you stay in tune with the aircraft. For those of you who have joined us from other fleets, we will arrange OB flights to help you in a similar way.
I thank you for your understanding and co-operation. While the break is not ideal, I honestly believe that it will have no long term effect to your course progress. In fact, I believe that this action is the best way to optimise continuity while ensuring that the quality of training is not compromised. Please do not hesitate to contact any of the FTM's if you have any queries.
Regards ....

No G Day callout however as Crew Control claims you are still under training hence they can do whatever they want.

Where in the CX books does it say that you have to work on G-days during training? Specifics please.
Just say "CAN NOT" - they already know that phrase anyways!

3.10 Crew Control may request a crew member to perform a duty on a GDO.
3.11 GDO Callout Compensation will be paid for working voluntarily on a GDO resulting from agreement to a Request from Crew Control, excluding:
B. Changes to Rosters to facilitate training prior to passing final Line Check of syllabus training (e.g. induction, conversion, upgrade etc).

Getting rostered for non training duties is most definitely voluntary and will get callout compensation.
They claim these JFO's are still under training (even when operating as SO's) hence no G day callout pay.
It is happening...
If these JF/O's are in the AOA I suggest they get some advice from them. At the very least advise the the AOA what is taking place.
If the company is putting you back to line flying as a S/O during a break in your training then..........................this IS NOT TRAINING, YOU ARE ALREADY QUALIFIED AS A S/O AND ARE NOT UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A TRAINING OFFICER.
THEREFORE:--- This can only be a REQUEST to work on a G Day, and if you work you should be paid accordingly.

What a mess
I would assume that the G days were in between training duties. So this is a problem. The spirit of the training roster was to allow the company to change training rosters to maximise training without the penalty of G day call outs etc. The reasoning was that it was good for the candidate and would get him/her through the course earlier.
However this is an altogether new kettle of fish. This is the first time I have heard of this happening in my ten years here !! Putting an officer back into his pre-course trip is not the intention of the training roster. The only fair thing they could do would be to change the duties to reserve (and yes that is not NORMALLY done when cancelling a duty...yea right) and leave the G days alone.
However that is why it should be dealt with through the AOA so that policy can be outlined for future and on going occurrences. I would guess that this has happened since the roster for March was published. If it continues on to next months published roster then the company is really taking advantage of these pilots !!

ACMS, I would disagree with you that S/O's remain qualified as S/O's while their JF/O course is in progress. It remains true when a seat change is not involved, but a radical change in duties is involved and is irrevocable without special retraining.
I am not on FOP's side, but I think they're correct.

Well if that's true they should be rostered with a training Captain or F/O.
If they are operating on the line WITHOUT training supervision and in their old position then.............................It's a line flight.
What a load of bollocks.
JUST SAY NO.

I say again.. Can anybody SHOW me where it says anything about the obligation for the "trainee" to work on a G-day during "training". I cant find it. WHERE does it say that??
EX Douglas Driver.
What you are referring to is only about the compensation. Not the obligation to perform any duty on a G-day.
Thanks.

Yet another 'interesting' interpretation by crew control?? Surely not!?!?!?
If this is indeed the case, it must be followed up by the AOA. For those involved, please email the AOA. If you do not receive a timely response, phone them to follow it up. Do not let the AOA ignore this situation. A couple of cases of them not returning emails or following up on cases have occured recently. A case of burying their head in the sand???
For those non-AOA members, please follow this up with your chief pilot ;-)

There should be no reason why the AOA shall ignore the situation, not return phone calls or not respond to e-mails. THIS IS WHY I PAY MY DUES - TO HAVE REPRESENTATION, NOT TO BE IGNORED.
However, getting back to the aforementioned subject, Yeager, if your license as a S/O has not expired then Crew Control have the authority to use you as as an operating crew member as an S/O.
The second issue, whether they can use you on a G day and use the excuse as Training, now that's incorrect. If the duty is as an S/O, there's no training, it's a normal line flight. Then it's basically a request to operate on a G day and as such, should you agree, you are entitled to G day compensation.

Not short of pilots? I hear the ANC-HKG flight has been delayed from yesterday because CC DT-ed a captain from YVR to ANC to fly as relief captain and after everyone was woken from the hotel, the crew realised that CC had put two line captains together with the SO. No-one right seat qualified!! The flight has of course been heavily delayed!
