An open question to those in the know..
I am seriously considering the move to CX with my partner, from our life in NZ.
My question is, will our life be full of more opportunity and promise if we make the move, as opposed to sticking it out in good old godzone.
I currently work for a stable regional airline in NZ earning $56000nz (280000hk approx) per year, my partner brings in $35000nz (175000hk).
I could anticipate an upgrade to command in approx 6 years - $90000nz (450000hk).
Considering my partner wont be working in HK.. in your informed opinion, if we are ready to leave the NZ lifestyle, is the move going to be worth it, or will we regret it.
Random Q's
1) Can my partner get work (she is a health educator) in the future
2) Can I easily sustain the two of us on an SO, JFO income.

Mate seriously how long is a piece of string?
Some couples have managed it easily in the past and some couples have not it all depends on about 500 things or possibly more but good luck either way.

A reasonable question. I'd have to say that you will both be able to afford a comfortable lifestyle in HKG on a SO/JFO salary unless you spend every night in "the Fong" boozing it up.
Personally I wouldn't leave NZ for money, I'd do it for the lifestyle, travel, and whatever else you hope to get out of CX.
If you think that makes it worthwhile then go for it.

Just an observation that HK Immigration does not recognise "partners" for Dependent Visas. You either need to be married or she would have to be sponsored for an Employment Visa in her own right for her to be able to reside in HK.

Christep...wasnt that rule repealed?? I am certain that it was and now wives can work on dependant visas.
Purple man, if you feel you have to fly a jet one day then this may be a good thing. If you are both happy with your career paths at the moment and life under the clouds is great then why would you upheave your family and risk the uncertainty of life in Hong Kong.
On saying that, if your wife is happy to take big chances and put up with alot of crap, it can be a very rewarding life. Quality of life for S.Os not that great for 1st 2 years then the decent housing kicks in, you can at least get a comfortable unit then.(but with still not enough dollars to do much else)
Our on going disputes with the company are the norm around the world so no matter who you are thinking of there will be industrial relation problems.

Indeed - wives can work on Dependent Visas. That wasn't my point. My point was that the OP refers to his "partner". If he and his "partner" are not legally married then she isn't going to get a Dependent Visa, so she would need to get some other form of visa in her own right in order to take up residence in Hong Kong. (It could be an Education Visa, for example - it doesn't have to be an Enployment Visa.)

Mate, while you don't have kids HKG is very affordable. I joined CX a long time ago and watched many of my peers leave(B scale) to join QF/EK etc. I think I can objectively say that CX is the best option going for us antipodeans. I don't mean to suggest it is a benevolent benefactor but it is vastly superior to QF, ANZ EK as current options.
Depends what you want out of your personal and professional lives. What I do like about CX is that it is possible to get basings etc...I believe NZ base is full at the moment but dead man's shoes means that with our expansion there should be many FO slots soon.
Back to your original question....my cost of living in HKG(wife, no kids) was half what it was in Oz with a kid...cost of living in HKG with kids is mega expensive. Just remember there is nothing stopping you joining for a while and choosing to leave later...
