so what about the ban
So what about this ban if i do get banned from the union all that means is wont be in a union ever again it dosent mean i cant work for an airline ever again ,the way i see it if i did accept a job at cx at the moment the only way it would effect me would be the lack of mates at work but who cares i have enough mates already

All it means is that you can't join an IFALPA union. There are plenty of others who will have you.. .Saying that I too have called IFALPA and they are not happy with the ban, AOA have no right to say who an individual can or cannot work for. Thats just basic human rights! Unfortunately IFALPA's constitution means they have to support HKAOA without public arguement.. .What I want to know is, what will the company do protect new pilots who break the embago, to protect them from bullying in the workplace aka the flightdeck? No one wants to go down this route, but if you are getting real aggro from a pro-union-skipper, what options are avialable to the new FO or SO.. .Maybe there is a grievence procedure. Maybe new recruits should stand together and form their own association. Hire a legal expert to protect them from bullying by the union militants. . .Just an idea!

A message for CX aspirants for what it is worth.. .. .Nigel Demery, CX captain and AOA president was a guest on a local newspaper "question and answer" session today, in which he answered e-mail questions to the local rag. . .. .In my really rather rare and insignificant posts to pprune I have tried to convey my contempt for the HKG AOA, the policies of its "leadership" and the gullibity of its members, because of the great disservice it does to post A scale joiners and CX aspirants.. .. .I think there may be a sea change.. .. .Whilst the questions were not provocative, it must be reported that there was no mention of any IFALPA action although there was an opportunity to make reference to it.. .. .In fact Nigel gave the impression of being proud of being a CX employee, as almost all CX pilots are.. .. .I am too technically stupid to insert the link to the article, (actually I couldn't find it).. .. .Despite the "threat" from IFALPA, an organisation which itself is under threat without going out on a limb for small potato like the HKG AOA, I suspect that if you want to join CX it will not be the career death knell that some posters to pprune would have you believe.

Quite frankly, who gives a s--t about the 'ban'?If you are offered a job by CX my advice is to take it as you could do a lot worse. The HKAOA have gone way too far and more members are begining to realise this.At the end of the day you can't 'take on' a company like CX,particulalry in HKG and expect to win.

Looks like the ban is over!!!. .. .No mention of it at all on the latest HKAOA press releases.. .. .http://bbs.hkalpa.org/public/default.htm. .. .To be honest it seems the union leaders made the wrong choice on the action to take. If I was to join CX, I'm not sure if I'd even join the AOA. This is due to their inablity to engage with the company and the attitude they have taken against people like me, who would love the chance to move up the career ladder.. .. .Other legal and technical services can be gained elsewhere.

Moon Unit, "Looks like the ban is over" What do you base that statement on? I have heard nothing about a lifting of the ban. As you mentioned also no mention of it on the AoA website.

Is there a ban? Sure there is a ban. Are you sure about the ban? No I'm not sure but there was a ban. When did they remove the ban? Did they remove the ban? Sure they removed the ban. Which ban are they talking about? Oh that ban, I thought they removed that ban. No they didn't remove the ban they just forgot about the ban because the ban was a bad ban, a very bad ban. Is there a ban?

. .. .IFALPA Recruitment Ban. .. .The International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA) has enacted a. .ban on recruitment into Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Veta Ltd. and USAB Ltd. on. .behalf of the member pilots of the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association (HKAOA).. .. .The Recruitment Ban comes into effect for any pilot who accepts employment. .commencing on or after 9 th October 2001.. .. .The recruitment ban has been enacted in response to Cathay Pacific management’s. .firing 53 pilots in July 2001. These pilots, with two exceptions, were terminated for no. .reason and they were denied the ability to appeal the decision through the. .contractual Disciplinary and Grievance procedure. The ban is to maximise the. .pressure to re-employ our pilots whilst the dispute continues. Recruitment of. .replacement pilots reduces the likelihood of a successful resolution to the dispute.. .. .Until further notice the acceptance of a contract of employment as a pilot with any of. .the above-mentioned companies will result in that pilot having his name placed on a. .list to be compiled by the HKAOA. The list will be circulated to all Member. .Associations (MA) of IFALPA for information and any action that MA may deem. .required in accordance with its own constitution or resolutions.. .. .Any pilot whose name is placed on this list will be ineligible to become a member of. .the HKAOA. Such ban will be for life. Furthermore, pilots who accept employment. .whilst the recruitment ban is in effect will be made unwelcome by the membership of. .the HKAOA.. .. .The HKAOA will not provide support for a listed pilot in any circumstances whereby it. .would normally act on behalf of a pilot. This includes Accident and Incident. .investigations, Discipline and Grievance procedures, legal representation in foreign. .countries, etc.

I knew some Von someone would throw up an IFALPA letter to scare the potential new guys. Everybody just lighten up. The ban is a source of embarrassment for many and will not have the career ending affect many want you to believe.

Moon Unit, . .. .Let me get this straight, you and all the other scabs should get together and form a union to protect you against the union??!? Legal advice? What are you going to do? Wave a stiff letter at the Captain because he won't go out for tea with you on a 4 day layover? . .. .Geez, next thing you know, you'll want better conditions and stable rostering! Maybe a bit more money. What, the company won't negotiate?!? Let's try and force them to be reasonable! Hey, they just fired some of us with no reason! Who are those damn scabs taking our positions!!! . .. .Loser

NoseGear,
What if the newhire was friends with one of the "49ers" and the captain had taken an upgrade and replaced the 49er by upgrading. Would you then understand if the newhire wouldn't go out for tea on a 4 day layover because he figured the captain was the scab?
I guess solidarity only works one way here?!?!?
