Hmmm, Flight Crew Relations Manager....is this the guy that gets to send out the pink slips to the malcontent pilots?
Maybe they should hire TWO.

Wink

As Flight Crew Relations Manager you will be responsible for being the mouthpiece for the orders we give you to tell the Pilots.
You will have NO decision making power, and any thought or utterance deemed to be constructive and facilitating relations with the Flight Crew will be ignored.
The position essentially is one of figurehead, whereby WE (management) can be seen to be doing the right thing. Further, when relations turn sour (again) you will be the Fall Guy.

Interested applicants please send CV to FOP Dept, Cathay Pathetic Airways

Thumbs down

I guess with attitudes like that, what chance is there of ever resolving this issue! You won't give anything a chance will you?

The full job description in the internal vacancy
system made interesting reading. Something along the lines of '..being sensitive to exisiting
reporting lines....'.... usual FOP turf war crap!

Well, well, well. Snake, you're not blind after all. There is still one thing that bothers me a little...you are aware that snakes are unable to hear, aren't you? (feeling vibration through the ground, usually before it's too late).

Kidding aside, do you think that the main obstacle to resolution (or at least a move in the right direction) is a "turf war"? If so, I'd be interested in your comments (and I'll keep the smarmy comments to myself).

Kubota

Happy New Year and thanks for the observations (sic) about my sight. Actually, all I want is for
this rubbish to end. I still regard CX as a class act and just wish everyone was battling SQ and the others rather than concentrating on the internal bickering which has become tiresome in the extreme. Note..not apportioning blame.

Yes I do think there are turf wars in your department (recent personal observation) but those nearer to the ground will know better than I. Whether or not they are a barrier to resolution of the dispute is another matter. Frankly I don't know.

What would worry me more is the appalling lack of
respect pilots I meet have for nearly all of their 20 odd fellow pilot managers flying desks. Of course there are exceptions but, overwhelmingly, there is dislike and mistrust which is not, as far as I can see directly related to company/AOA issues.

This awful atmosphere is unique within the organisation and whilst there may be history ("aaahh he only went into the office to get a basing") it surely cannot go on if the airline is to move forward as one? Perhaps a fundamental review of FOP....phew....

Sadly no magic wand. Fingers crossed for a better 2002.

SH

SH, thanks for the reply. I agree almost totally with your observations. I spent an afternoon at the AOA's offices recently and all I could think was what a waste of talent, morale and resources this whole debacle has been.

More than a few of us want it to end as well.

Here's hoping for a Happy New Year.

Well Kubota, it would appear that the ball is in the AOA's court.....so what's the problem?

85268, you're missing the point entirely. TWO players in this game, AOA and CX. AOA has been standing on the court for MONTHS, and CX won't come out of the clubhouse.

Yes Kubota.....the AOA may be standing in the court, but the CX management is calling the shots. What can the AOA possibly offer at this point...more empty promises to its members perhaps?

Perhaps your good mate Herb Kelleher can teach you (and CX) the value of an on-side workforce.

I quote:

"A financial analyst once asked me if I was afraid of losing control of our organization. I told him I've never had control and I never wanted it. If you create an environment where the people truly participate, you don't need control. They know what needs to be done, and they do it. And the more that people will devote themselves to your cause on a voluntary basis, a willing basis, the fewer hierarchs and control mechanisms you need."

See the full text at

http://www.pfdf.org/leaderbooks/l2l/spring97/kelleher.html

THAT's what the AOA has to offer. Swires (and yours?) notion of rule by intimidation belongs in the archives, under F for "failures".

Well said Kubota. Your quote accurately reflects the mood of all of us in the Cathay of the past. There truly was just US, as against US and THEM and a lot of problems were solved in an amicable manner over lunch or dinner at the Swire penthouse. Not even 411A could have found cause to stir the pot, as is his want.

Yes indeed Kubota, Herb has the right idea but....the present management at CX certainly does NOT share his opinions, so what CAN the AOA do about the situation? Looks to me like they hold all the face cards. And in todays market they could replace most all the pilots without difficulity.
Better to find some middle ground. Your AOA representatives up to now have certainly dropped the ball, big time.

Wrong! Ideal for 411A, especially since his L1011 Subic ops with the help of a CX veteran seems to have fizzled out?

Clearly, CX DO want better relations with the crew.

Taking the 5th, eh 85268?
