If I remeber correctly if you had a UK PPL (Aeroplanes) Single Engine Land then if you wanted to fly SLMG you could do a test. The examiner entered the Certificate of Test in your logbook and then you could fly SLMG's. There was no CAA involvement.
Now I have someone who has a UK PPL (aeroplanes) SLMG. Am I able to do a test in a SEP and then annotate his logbook in the same way?

In the case you mention regarding the UK PPL then both ratings Group A and SLMG were in the licence and could be activated by a C of T. The PPL (Aeroplane) SLMG course was conducted by instructors who did not meet the requirements of ICAO Annex 1 so there will be no aditional ratings in the licence, so apart from the SLMG there will be nothing else to activate. Having converted many SLMG pilots to PPLs there never was a simple C of T option.

I don't know if it's of any use to you, but the CAA, on the basis of my NPPL SLMG rating, entered into my EASA CPL(A) license a TMG rating, without requiring any paperwork.
(I couldn't have a sailplane license issued: the CAA said they wouldn't do it, so I lost the right to fly a non TMG motorglider, and to fly a glider as well)
